Section 2: chemical reactions

 Chemical reaction: process in which the atoms of one or more substance rearrange to form
one or new substances.
 Reactants: substances that start chemical reaction found on the left side.
 products: substances that form in chemical reaction found on the right side.
 law of conservation of mass: matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical
reaction.

Physical change ‫تغير فيزيائي‬ Chemical change ‫تغير كيميائي‬

Change the shape only. Change the structure

No new matter New matter
Cutting paper- melting of ice – cutting Rusting of iron – burning wood – cooking
wood. food

 Sign of chemical reaction / how to know chemical reaction:

1) Release of light. 2) Release of heat. 3) new gas

2) new liquid 4) new solid

SiO2 + 4HF → SiF4 + 2H2O

Q1: what is the name of the symbols represent? Chemical reaction

Q2: what are the reactants? SiO2 + HF
Q3: what are the products? SiF4 + H2O
Q4: what is the arrow called? Forms – yield to
Q5: is the equation balanced? Why?
Yes; because the number of atoms in the reactants and products are equal.
Q6: why should chemical equation be balanced?
1) matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
2) The number of atoms in the reactants must equal the number of atoms in products.
Q7: why do scientists use chemical equations?
To equal the number of atoms in the reactants and products.

Energy of reactants

 Activation energy: the minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
 Exothermic reaction: reaction that releases thermal energy.
 Endothermic reaction: reaction that absorbs thermal energy.

Q: Wy do some chemical reactions not occur?

Because they need very large amount of activation energy.

Endothermic reaction ‫تفاعل ماص للحرارة‬ Exothermic reaction ‫تفاعل طارد للحرارة‬

Energy of reactants is less than energy of Energy of reactants is greater than energy
products of products

Absorb energy Release energy

Q: why does energy change every reaction?

Because chemical bonds are formed or broken in the products.

Enzymes

 Catalyst: substance that lower the activation energy in a reaction.

 Enzyme: catalyst that speeds up the chemical reactions in living things.
 Active site: a region where a substrate binds to an enzyme.

Q: what is the role of a catalyst in a chemical reaction?

1) Speed up chemical reaction.

2) Does not increase products.
3) Does not waste in reaction.

Q: give an example of an enzyme in human body?

Amylase; speeds up the digestion of starch ‫النشا‬

Q: how does an enzyme work?

1) A substrate binds to the active site in enzyme.

2) The shape of the active site changes and becomes enzyme-substrate complex.
3) Chemical bonds in substrates are broken and form new bonds.
4) Enzyme releases products formed.

Q: what are the factors that affect enzymes?

1) Temperature
2) PH

Q: Give examples of how enzymes are important?

1) Green apples ripen because of enzymes.’
2) When a snake bites a human, enzymes produce red blood cells.
