Experiment Title: Batch Leaching of NaCl-Sand Mixture with Water

as Solvent

Objectives:

• To compare single-stage, crosscurrent, and countercurrent beaker-scale extraction operation

• To calculate single-stage, crosscurrent and countercurrent extraction efficiencies
• To determine the advantages and disadvantages of multistage extraction
• To compare single stage and multistage extraction

Equipment and Materials

• Lab Scale
• Glass rods
• Beakers
• Westpal Balance
• Salt
• Sand

Reagent Computation

A. Construction of Density-Concentration Plot for NaCl solution

1. Make 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 25% (by weight of NaCl solution

Basis: 20g of H2O per NaCl concentration = 20g of Sand per 100-ml Beaker
B. Fresh Feed Preparation

1. Prepare 150g of Sand per 1L Beaker. Make 12 samples with equal amount of
sand label from (I- XII)

2. Amount of salt is unknown (x) for each sample

3. Pour 150ml of water in each Beaker

C. Single-Stage Extraction Operation

1. Add the following amount to each specified sample

Beaker I – 150 ml

Beaker II – 300ml

Beaker III – 600ml

D. Multi-Stage Crosscurrent Extraction Operation

1. Add 600 ml of H2O to the following container

Beaker IV – 2 portions of 300 ml

Beaker V - 3 portions of 200 ml

Beaker VI - 4 portions of 150ml

E. Steady-State Multi-Stage Countercurrent Extraction Operation

1. Add 600ml of H2O to each beaker from Beaker VII to Beaker X and then decant
600ml of solution per Beaker. Label as (Decant-Beaker No.)
Graphical Presentation of Procedures:
Safety Hazards:

● Sand can cause silicosis, lung cancer, and breathing problems when handled
improperly.
● Glasswares are not that strong, that can break when applied too much force on it, that
may cause shards to scatter and may injure other students.
● Handling the Westphal balance, not applying too much force on one side, for it may
break.
