Reflection Essay

My English 201 Takeaway

Most of the people have phobia when it comes to speaking publicly or speaking out
their thoughts to others, and well, I am one of them. As a teacher there is a need for
having near perfect communication and public speaking skills. I realized that there is
more to teaching than explaining the lessons to students; for example, there is need
to understand the workplace culture, respect, rapport with students and colleagues,
listen to them and asking for support when needed.

Before I joined our English 201 class, I am hesitant at first knowing that this will
include public speaking and the like. I was not wrong. We did a lot of listening and
speaking skills activities wherein we, students, were the ones to share one strategy
in the class. As the days went by, I have learned to love the subject as it gave me
opportunities to excel and share what I have in mind.

I have gained much confidence in teaching because this class. I was actually always
nervous when I am given a part to speak in the public. This has drastically changed
since I attended our teaching listening and speaking class. I have gained
communication skills that can help me develop as a teacher. In addition, we do a lot
of oral presentation and this has really worked on my confidence. In the absence of
fear of making mistakes and nervousness, I am able to make convincing
presentations.

In the same way, I can encourage my students to be not afraid to speak out their
ideas in class. Through using the different speaking skills strategies that we have
discussed in our English 201 class, I believe these can motivate them to be more
confident in communicating their thoughts in the class.
Second, our English 201 class has improved my listening skills. Most people lack the
patience of listening. As what we have discussed, this skill is said to be the most
neglected language skill. And yes, I can attest to that. Listening is more than just
hearing; it requires a mental operation, focus, attention and effort for you to hear,
understand, remember and interpret what you have listened to.

As a matter of fact, someone said that listening skill is a skill that is almost becoming
extinct – specifically in the class. A teacher must always learn how to listen to his
students, to his fellow teachers and the administrator to become an effective
educator. It is important to become an active listener and not just a passive one.
With you being an active listener, it will give your students an opportunity for them to
have a valid and well-reasoned feedback about the lesson you have tackled. It will
also help me get clarification when the need arises.

As a teacher, I need to become an active listener because through this, I can


encourage a smooth flow of information and discussion of lesson in the class. In the
same way, I can also guide my students in developing their listening skills. It is
common knowledge to us teachers that students nowadays get easily bored,
especially when teachers always do the talk. By using the different listening
strategies we have discussed in the class, I am confident that my students will be
more encouraged and eager to learn this very important skill.

In order to impart these skills to my students, I must become a role model to them
first. As the adage says, “Practice what you teach.” I must become a good listener
and speaker so they can be inspired to do the same. In a nutshell, the skills I have
gained in this English 201 class have been very essential to my profession. I have
improved my way of communication. I have developed my rapport with my students
and colleagues. And lastly, I have gained my confidence in my work. I have become
a better version of myself.
