STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR Advanced Engineering

Management Programme
I am Sinto Johnson from Kerala, India .I am 21 year’s old. I am a final year student for
bachelors in mechanical engineering from APJ Abdul Kalam technological university. During
my undergraduate studies I developed a strong interest and liking for management aspects
of engineering when I came across subject like industrial engineering and marketing
management On doing more research, I realized that engineering and management
together makes a good combination and has good potential for people who want to be
involved in the industry at both the technical and the managerial level. I believe that MSC in
Advanced Engineering Management would help me Enhance my statistical, quantitative, and
technical expertise likewise develop valuable business skills such as management decision
making, formulating strategies to improve production, or analysing a company's supply
chain.

I remember my tenth grade science classes being an absolute joy for me, mostly due to my
curiosity and appreciation for scientific knowledge. From middle schools automobiles
especially cars never failed to excite me. My curiosity and appreciation turned into a passion
for science which allowed me to secure above good scores in mathematics, physics and
chemistry which put me in a favourable position to apply for my engineering studies and
pursue my undergrad at APJ Abdul Kalam technological university in the Mechanical
department. I chose Mechanical Engineering as I aim for a career in industrial and
manufacturing sector in addition to it’s a broad field encompassing the many disciplines of
science.

My undergraduate major has given me a wide exposure to numerous subjects like advanced
manufacturing technology, business economics, , principles of management, metrology and
instrumentation, marketing management, material handling and facility planning, Industrial
engineering etc. My under graduation has been a rewarding experience as I have got
numerous chances to visit industries to take a close look at the application of mechanics and
its related theories. In addition to this, with the increasing role of computers in every field of
engineering, I have undergone career enhancing certifications like AutoCAD, CATIA and
ANSYS which helped me to learn various design aspects.

I have always believed that undergraduate study exposes the different dimensions of the
profession but in order to acquire an in-depth knowledge in a chosen field, graduate study is
a necessity. During the four year bachelor program I had a brief opportunity to work in
groups for different projects and during these projects I realised that I was really good at
managing a group and this was when I became fascinated and motivated to pursue a career
in Engineering Management and after talking to various people who have worked in
management, I understood that a management degree was essential to achieving my goal. I
wasn’t sure if I had managed the teams well, but I knew I really enjoyed working in such a
setting. Working with different people and getting the job done gave me a feeling of self-
satisfaction and I really enjoyed it. My professors who saw my inclination to work in such an
environment suggested that I do a master’s program in management after completion of my
bachelor program. I was able to understand that the course would provide me an
opportunity in areas such Marketing, Financial Management, Operations Management and
strategic Innovation Management and it was perfectly fine .

By being part of my dad’s business I understood that I had too much to learn to become the
management professional I aspire to become. I was able to understand the challenges of a
manager’s role; the responsibilities and accountabilities and how a manager must behave in
such a taxing and dynamic business set up. I have observed managers making important
decision, solving conflicts, carrying out negotiations and managing people. I also found that
they were very people-centric and possessed excellent communication and interpersonal
skills that made them excellent communicators and easy to communicate to. I also
understood that my academic experience wasn’t enough and I simply lacked focused
academic exposure in management studies. Having realized that I needed to train myself
better, I chose to pursue post graduate studies in management.

The reason why I chose university of Birmingham for my graduate studies is firstly, because
of the Industrial links. From my research I was able to understand that the university was a
hub of industrial England and has a multitude of opportunities for working on industrial
placement projects. Secondly, the quality of education provided particularly engineering and
science and the fact that it had a very vibrant, welcoming and cosmopolitan campus with
many cultural and social events that suited my interests fascinated me. Furthermore, the
university also rates globally in terms of the global impact of its research and finally, it was
the great culture and environment of Birmingham, I found that the city was extremely
welcoming to students. The British universities are known for its international recognition
and its long standing tradition of providing quality education. Work permit after studies,
Scholarship and financial support, health benefits, cross-cultural experience and an
opportunity to work while you study in order to develop valuable skills are a few reasons
why I chose to study in UK.

During the Master’s program at your university I would be able to network with a variety of
people through the various clubs and organizations in the campus. Interactions with like-
minded students and industry representatives would allow me to sharpen my business
acumen and help me plan my roadmap post achieving my short-term goal. An Advanced
Engineering Management Programme would sharpen my existing skills and later with this I
would like to work as a consultant for few years. In a time span of 10 years post-graduation,
I would like to see myself with an established business in terms of technology and
innovation. I hope to come out with a vision, which will have its own definition of
development.

I look upon myself as a candidate who has profound knowledge in mechanical engineering
Along with it I possess soft skills like perseverance, self-confidence and leadership This makes
me a well-rounded personality and thus I am sure I would be able to benefit my fellow
classmates to grow and excel. I am confident that I have the preparation and potential to
prove an asset to your graduate program, as a graduate student. I look forward to an
intellectually inspiring and fruitful association with your University.
