Program of Interest- MS in Chemical Engineering

Statement of Purpose
Respected Graduate Committee members,
I have always aspired to choose a career which could help to make a difference in current
industrial practices and thereby society. Today as I stand at the threshold of new pathways of
learning, I have without hesitation chosen to pursue my Masters in the field of Chemical
Engineering, the field that extracts me the most and draws the best of my abilities. It has always
been my dream to design a process plant which is both fiscally prudent and environmental
friendly.
Right from my school I had a strong inclination for Math and Allied Sciences, which proved
decisive in choosing a career in Engineering. Prior to my undergraduate school my educational
background consists of twelve years of school education in CBSE board. This has been the
foundation of my education and served as a platform on which I developed a broad interest
in Math and Sciences, which had resulted in my taking up Math, Physics and Chemistry as major
subjects in the two years of higher secondary education. It is at this point of time where
chemistry fascinated me a lot and after that I chose to pursue my career in Chemical
Engineering. Due to my grades in 12th exams and high ranking in AIEEE competitive exam I got
admission in B. tech course of four years in Chemical Engineering at Pandit Deendayal
Petroleum University, one of the most reputable universities in Gujarat, India.

My four years of undergraduate studies exposed me to a wide range of subjects

in Chemical Engineering, the curriculum included Fluid Flow Operations, Heat Transfer
operations, Process Heat Transfer design, Mass Transfer operations, Chemical Reaction
Engineering, Transport Phenomena, Modeling and Optimization and Process control. During my
undergraduate studies I did want to not limit myself to just classroom learning so I gave a
seminar on “Application of Ionic Liquids in Separation Technology”, participated in
“Computational flow dynamics workshop” and attended an International Conference of
Chemical Industry. I also undertook a civic and social internship of 4 weeks at a local NGO.

As for gaining experience of industrial work, I have done internships in petrochemical and acetic
acid plant. I have done a 3-week internship in Acetic Acid Plant at Gujarat Narmada Valley
Fertilizers (GNFC) and 6-week internship at Nirma Alindra Linear Alkyl Benzene plant. During
internship, I got familiar with how different unit operations are carried out for mass production
and various equipment’s role in maintaining process parameters like temperature, pressure and
flow rate for production. I also learned importance of safety procedures in an industry. At Nirma
I also made a project on minimization of pentane loss which included designing a shell and tube
heat exchanger.

My interest in design led me to choose “Propylene Production via Propane Dehydrogenation” as

my final year project. It consisted of designing a conceptual process design for the production of
3, 00,000 MTPA propylene using adiabatic reactor, cryogenic separation and conventional
propane-propylene column in ASPEN.

I am aware of challenging path ahead of me in my higher studies. I believe your university could
be the nucleus to accomplish my goals, as ample opportunities exist for students like me to
intimate independent study and to become involved in active research programs, both
experimental and theoretical. Your graduate program blends high quality course work and
research facilities at the cutting edge of every sub-field. In all, it is your university that furnishes
a course that will serve me well in my career and prepare me for a lifetime of learning. I believe
the programs offered will help me acquire the versatility needed to reach my fully potential as a
chemical engineer.

I hope your committee will consider my application for upcoming intake. I look forward in
hearing from you soon and if you have any queries do not hesitate to contact me via email at

Thanking You,
Vidur Gopalka
