The conspirators and their

THE AFTERMATH problem


The two leaders of the conspiracy to kill Caesar were

Marcus Iunius Brutus and Caius Cassius Longinus.
However, the conspirators had no plan for Rome

after Caesar's death and did not have the sympathy
of the Romans. Also, Ceasar's in his will left huge
estates to the city of Rome as parks and left money
to each citizen of Rome.

return peace to Rome:
Mark Antony - general and right hand man to
Casear
Lepidus - commander and ally of Caesar
Octavian - nephew and adopted son of Caesar

THE SECOND The armies of Octavian and Mark Antony met the
armies of Caesar's killers in Philippi, Macedonia
TRIUMVIRATE The Battle of Philippi (42 BC) resulted in the
death of most of the conspirators and the
triumvirs consolidating their power in Rome

Dividing the power


The triumvirs divided the Roman territory between
themselves
Mark Antony - Asia and Egypt
Lepidus - Africa
Octavian - Gallia and Hispania

The start of conflicts


In 36 BC Lepidus resigned from his position of
triumvir, leaving Antony and Octavian fighting.
MARK ANTONY IN EGYPT
In Egypt, Mark Antony started an affair with
Caesar's former lover Cleopatra VII, Pharaoh of
Egypt. Their story is immortalized in the
Shakespeare play "Antony and Cleopatra".
THE FINAL WAR OF THE REPUBLIC
36-29 BC

Octavian engaged in heavy propaganda against


Antony playing on Romans' anti-Eastern sentiments
Octavian managed to convince the Roman Senate
to declare war on Antony and Cleopatra
Antony's and Octavian's fleet met in the naval at OCTAVIAN MARK ANTONY
Actium (29 BC) which ended in Octavian's victory
Antony fled to Alexandria, Egypt with Octavian in
his footsteps
With the city under siege, Antony and Cleopatra
committed suicide
Octavian took control of Egypt and later had
Caesar's son, Caesarion murdered
THE VICTORY AT ACTIUM ENABLED OCTAVIAN TO CONSOLIDATE HIS
POWER OVER ROME AND THE SENATE.

HE ADOPTED THE TITLE OF PRINCEPS ("FIRST CITIZEN") AND IN 27 BC


WAS AWARDED THE TITLE OF AUGUSTUS ("REVERED") BY THE ROMAN
SENATE.
