Розробка уроку «Охорона навколишнього середовища» з англійської мови
в 9-му класі
Topic: “Environmental protection”
Objectives: - to activate lexical materials on the topic; - to develop students’ language skills; - to develop the skills of listening, reading and writing through the interactive methods; - to form ability to make presentations; - to control the ability of working in pairs and groups; - to develop critical thinking and develop their imagination; - to teach students how to look after the environment and to save our planet. Equipment: a computer, a screen, cards, students’ presentations. Procedure I. Introduction 1. Greeting T: Good morning pupils. I’m glad to see you. Everybody looks wonderful today. So, let’s greet each other and send good wishes to each other. (Possible variants: pupils face each other in chain saying “Hello Ann! I’m very glad to see you. I wish you good marks today. Hello Pete! I’m very glad to see you. May all your dreams come true!”…) I hope everybody is in a good mood and is ready to start our lesson. 2. Introduction into the topic T: I’d like to start our lesson with a poem. Ps: Great wide beautiful world With wonderful waters round you curled And the wonderful grass upon your breast. World, you are beautifully dressed! The wonderful air is over me And the wonderful wind shaking the tree. It walks in the waters and wheels the mill, And talks to itself on the top of the hill. T: Dear pupils, as you’ve understood the theme of our lesson will be connected with nature. The motto of our lesson is “No matter what colour your skin is, what language we speak, we have one thing in common: all of us are people of the same planet with the same worries, troubles and future”. Today we’re going to discuss the main environmental problems endangering us and try to find their solutions. II. Warming up activities T: We live in a magic world. The world is full of wonderful things. It is our nature. So, let’s discuss the problem: “The role of nature in our life”. What is nature? P1: Nature is our best and kindest friend. P2: Nature gives us life. We are children of nature. P3: Nature provides us with mineral resources, rivers, forests, fields. P4: It teaches us to be kind and clever, attentive and creative, to understand the world around us. P5: Nature presents us with beautiful songs of the woods, of the wind, of the birds. P6: Nature shows us wonderful pictures of different colours: the blue sky and the green grass, the white snow and the black night, the red puppy and the yellow sunflower. T : Thank you for your ideas. Our first spaceman Y. A. Gagarin said: “How beautiful our planet is. How small it is. People of the world, take care of it, protect it”. Protection of nature has become one of the most actual problems of the 21-st century for all people of the whole world. Let’s read what some very wise people said about it: P1: “To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house”. /Dalai Lama/ P2: “The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth”. /Chief Seattle/ P3: “The world is a fine place and worth fighting for”. /Ernest Hemingway/ T: Do you agree with them? Ps: Yes, we do. Our planet is our home and we have to protect it. T: That’s right. The proverb says: “Look after our planet, it is the only we have.” Ш. The main part of the lesson 1. Brainstorm T: What is environment? Think about it and let’s make the mind map. What associates with the word “environment”?

2. Presentation of the vocabulary
T: Sort out the words in the word box into two categories: Ecological problems Reasons Pollution, cutting down the forests, reduction of the ozone layer, famine, extinction of species, global warming, using of chemical fertilizers, power station emission, destruction of natural resources, littering, overpopulation, noise, greenhouse gasses, incurable diseases, radiation, abuse. 3. Complete the sentences with one of the following words: destruction carbon dioxide population water chemical fertilizers incurable diseases extinction ozone layer population control radiation 1. The world’s … doubled. 2. Mankind is driving many species to … 3. Trees can help because they absorb … 4. There’s a high rate of … in Chernobyl Region. 5. Levels of lead in air can be reduced by … 6. Pollution is making a hole in … 7. The Dnipro and the Dniester are the most polluted … bodies in Ukraine. 8. People were exposed to the deadly level of … in Chernobyl zone before the evacuation. 9. Overfishing in seas and oceans manifests itself in … of natural resources. 10. About half of the … used in the field in Ukraine are washed off into the river. 4. Listening to the song T: So, you see that ecological situation in the whole world is very serious. What are the most important ecological problems of our planet? Listen to the song, watch the clip by M. Jackson and think about the main idea of it. T: What is this song about? Ps: The song is about: Pollution of air by plants and factories. Destruction of forests. Littering. Dirty rivers, seas, oceans. The contamination of the soil. Heating and greenhouse effect. Extinction of animals and plants. T: Name 9 species of animals you have seen. Ps: Monkeys, toucans, elephants, zebras, giraffes, dolphins, seals, antelopes, whales. T: Which of them are endangered? Ps: Whales, dolphins, some species of antelopes, elephants. T: What is the main idea of the song? P1: People should care about the environment, stop killing animals, destroying forests, polluting air water and land. P2: Humans should live in harmony with nature and save this beautiful world. P3: It’s a call to all the people of the world to be united and save the earth. 5. Project work (group work) T: I agree with you. And now it’s high time to listen to your projects ”The most important problems of our planet”. Group 1 Imagine a world with no drinking water, and no water to wash or cook with. It’s hard to imagine this, because we use water every day without even thinking about it. Yet there are terrible water shortages all over the world. A lot of people in the world don’t even have clean water to drink. We all need water – not just for our homes and factories, but to survive. There are things that we can all do to save water. The solution begins at home. We can save the water from our baths and use it for the gardens. Governments can help by passing laws to stop factories from wasting and polluting water. If factories recycled water and stopped pouring chemicals into our lakes and rivers, there would be a lot more clean water around. Governments could also stop water companies from wasting millions of liters of water because of leaking pipes. Many cities have successfully saved water by repairing pipes. The time has come to start understanding the value of water, before a world without clean water becomes a terrible reality. Group 2 Every day there are more and more people living on the Earth. All these people need room to live. So they move into places that are already homes for plants and animals. Forests are cut down, and wild areas are filled with houses and stores. When people move into a new land, the plants and animals that live there can become endangered and some even become extinct. It’s a panda. They are in danger because they are loosing their natural habitant. It’s a tiger. They are close to extinction because of their precious fur. It’s an elephant. They are disappearing because of their tusks that are used to make ornaments. It’s a turtle. They are close to extinction because beaches where they lay eggs have become popular with tourists who damage eggs. We need to do something fast before it is too late for them. In our mind we should create more national parks and conservation areas. Another solution is to promote education about endangered species. Group 3 About 150 years ago the air was pure and clean. Then people started building factories and many of the things they make, like cars, put a lot of harmful gases into the air. Today the air is so polluted in some places that it’s not always safe to breathe. Many cities around the world have air filled with a pollution called “smog”. This is so strong in some places that the air, which should be a beautiful blue, looks brown. Polluted air is not only bad for people and animals, but for trees and plants, as well. And in some places it’s even damaging farmers’ crops – the food we eat. So, it’s very important for us to “clean up our act”, and clean the air we all breathe. Group 4 When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Once a week the garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that’s the last you see of it. But what do you think happens to the garbage then? Does just disappear? No way! Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump, or landfill, where the garbage truck empties it onto the ground. After the truck leaves, a big tractor comes along and pushes dirt on top of the garbage. So, most of our garbage is just buried. Now we are making so much garbage that in many places, there is not enough room to bury it all. We have to act fast and cut down the amount of garbage we make. Can we do it? You bet! We can recycle (which means re-using materials instead of throwing them away) and recycle (which means not buying things that can’t be re-used, like plastic wrapping and other packaging). If we recycle and recycle we will produce a lot less garbage, and help keep our planet green! 6. Reading T: We’ve already mentioned all types of pollution. But, still, there is one kind which has not been mentioned yet. We can’t see it, because it’s invisible, but we can hear it very well. Do you have any ideas what kind of pollution it is? It deals with noise and is called noise pollution. So, now you’re going to read the text “The invisible pollution”. (There are two variants of the text, A and B. Variant A has the text in full. Variant B has the second part of the text cut into strips. Students read the first part of the text and look through the second part. There are ten noises which most annoy people in Britain. Student A reads the text to student B and student B puts the strips in the right order. Then they check the text). The invisible pollution What do you think of when you hear the word pollution? Factories with black smoke coming out of the chimneys, dirty rivers and beaches, piles of rubbish? But what many people don’t realize is that there is another kind of pollution you can’t see but which affects us all wherever we live, at any time of day or night, and which can make our lives a misery – noise. According to the Environmental health department, noise pollution is now one of the worst problems in cities and towns. Noises: 1. Neighbours who make a lot of noise. 2. Building sites. 3. Shops or pubs where they play loud disco music. 4. Burglar or car alarms whose owners don’t switch them off. 5. Noisy parties which go on until very late. 6. Road works. 7. Dogs which bark when people walk past the house or during the night. 8. Heavy traffic and drivers hooting. 9. People who play their car radios at full volume with the windows open. 10.Planes which fly low over towns and cities. (After reading and checking students choose three noises which most annoy them and explain why). 7. Speaking T: Byron said: “He who loves not his country can love nothing”. We live in a beautiful country, Ukraine. It is our home. What ecological problems are there in our country? P1: One of the problems is water pollution. The Dniester and the Danube belong to the most polluted water bodies. They are filled with poison industrial waste, all kinds of chemical elements and pesticides. Industrial enterprises of large cities waste harmful substances into river and sea’s waters. The emissions destroy fishing industry and lead to a damage of wildlife. P2: Another problem is air pollution. High rates of occupational diseases are documented mostly among the coal miners. Many heavy-metal and chemical- exposure-related incidents and illnesses have been reported in industrialized areas, mainly in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Lugansk. P3: The next ecological problem is the problem of the Sea of Azov. Many industrial centres such as Mariupol, Berdyansk pour into the sea all kinds of chemicals. It naturally effects the state of the sea water and the shore line flora and fauna. T: What is the most terrible ecological problem of Ukraine? P1: It’s Chernobyl. The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused radioactive contamination on the 26-th of April in 1986. It’s very dangerous because it hurts the health of the people and provokes different diseases. A great damage has been done to the agriculture and forests as well. T: As you see our country has many ecological problems. What is the ecological situation in our native village Kompaniyivka? This problem was given to our reporters. Let’s listen to them. P1: Our native village is Kompaniyivka. We do like our village because we were born here, our parents live here and we’ve spent here almost all our life. Our village is situated in a very beautiful place. It’s very nice in all seasons. But look what we’ve done! Litter is something we can see everywhere. I think it’s because of lack of education. Many people just don’t know that it’s wrong to drop litter. That’s why the streets are dirty. We know that twice a week garbage trucks come to every house. But some people don’t want to wait for the trucks and put litter everywhere they want. P2: Our people even throw litter into the ponds. Earlier the water was clean and full of fish there. But now the ponds are polluted with garbage. Their banks are covered with cans, paper, bottles. People have a rest there and then leave litter, break trees to make fire. P3: We have to reduce the air pollution. Every day we breathe the gas from transport. People should use cars less, only when they really need them. For example, some people simply use cars instead of going to shop on foot or just drive to see the beauty of the village. We mustn’t burn rubbish, leaves and grass not to pollute the air too. That’s why we address to everybody. Kompaniyivka is our home. Take care of it! 8. Role- play (group work) T: Imagine, that you were given the task to found an ecological organization. -What organization would you found and why? -Draw the emblem of your organization. For example: P1: Our organization is “Kids for a Clean Environment”. It’s the world’s largest youth environmental organization. This is our emblem. Membership is free for children and teachers. Our mission is to provide information on environmental issues for children, to encourage and facilitate youth’s involvement with effective environmental action. P2: Our organization is called “The World Wide Fund for Nature ”. It’s an independent conservation organization. We want to stop degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a fixture in which humans live in harmony with nature. We are for reducing the burning of coal, oil and gas; for developing alternative sources of energy; for developing national and international programmers to preserve and develop forests; for protecting endangered species. P3: Our organization is “Greenpeace”. We are for protecting the environment from damage caused by industrial processes or military activities. We prevent governments from testing nuclear weapons, prevent companies from pouring poisonous chemicals into the sea. We also try to save whales and other sea animals from being killed. 9. Writing (group work) T: The Earth is a big place with big problems. You can’t solve them alone, but there are things you can do to help. An old Chinese proverb says: “A journey of thousand miles must begin with a single step”. The way it is. If you do something to help and many others do the same, all the small steps can add up to a lot of forward movements. What can you personally do to protect the environment? Make a sunflower with the solutions of the problems. Students’ solutions: 1. Don’t litter with paper, cans and bottles. 2. To make streets cleaner pick up and throw litter into the rubbish containers. 3. Clean rubbish from lakes, ponds and rivers. 4. Recycle used materials such us metal, bottles and paper. 5. Have showers, not baths. Showers use less water. 6. Save energy: use less electricity and gas. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. 7. Don’t break trees, leave wild flowers to others to enjoy. 8. To save forest don’t leave the fire. 9. Plant more trees and flowers. 10. Place bird houses in the yards; don’t destroy nests. 11. Feed birds in winter and help them to survive in the cold. 12. Walk or use a bicycle instead of going by car. IV. Evaluation T: Now let’s sum everything up. I should say you worked well, you were active. It was very pleasant for me to be a participant in the work, your adviser, and your teacher. Thank you for your fruitful work. (The teacher puts marks and comments upon them). V. Hometask Write a letter to Green Peace with suggestions on the environment protection. T: Thank you very much for the lesson. But remember my friends! The most dangerous pollution is the pollution of the soul. Keep your souls clean! Don’t pollute them with anger, envy or selfishness and the world will be better place to live! I would like to finish the lesson with the great song; it is a masterpiece of the famous British group “The Beatles” – “Imagine” by John Lennon. Imagine there’s no heaven, It’s easy if you try, No hell below us, Above us only sky, Imagine all the people Living for today… Imagine there are no countries, It isn’t hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, No religion too, Imagine all the people Living life in peace… Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can, No need for greed of hunger, A brotherhood of men…
