Week 1
1 DAY: Perseverance
Goals and targets are important in every person’s life, including yours. They are part of your learning and
growing. They help you improve and learn new things. Achieving a goal is not always easy, because in life
there will always be challenges and difficulties. But these should not stop you from working towards your
goals. One important virtue that can help you achieve your goals is perseverance. In this lesson, you will know
more about this virtue which will help you stay focused on your goals and help you in your efforts to achieve
them.
Perseverance is your continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties and failure. It is not
giving up no matter how hard your situation is. Let’s read the story titled “Hunting for Smiles”.
The Princess of the fairies was ill. The doctors could not find what the problem was, but luckily two
little dragons managed to find out what was wrong. The problem was that the Princess wasn't seeing
anyone smile. So, the two little dragons set off around the world, trying to find some smiles. Well, they
didn't come across a single one. So off they flew, to the planets, to the stars, searching for a smile.
They travelled so far and for so long, with no success, that one of the dragons decided to head
back, so he could be with the Princess when she died, which she surely would soon. But the other dragon
decided to carry on, and in the very next planet he visited - a small and dark planet which was hardly
visible - he found out an amazing fact: all the smiles in the Universe were right there, gathering for a
party. The dragon told the smiles what the problem was, and without hesitation millions of smiles agreed
to accompany him on his return home. The dragon arrived, and as soon as the Princess's gaze fell on so
many smiles, she instantly regained her health and happiness. The first dragon, on seeing this, was
immensely happy that his friend had been more persevering and patient than himself.

Guide questions:
1. What happened to the Princess of the fairies?
2. How did perseverance helped the second dragon to find the cure for the ill princess?
Many things hinder us from accomplishing things. Sometimes, it is simply because we think I cannot do
it, or because somebody tells us or makes us feel that we cannot do it. During other times, it may be because
we do not have the money or other resources needed to reach our goal. Maybe, bad experiences in the past
keep us from working toward goals that we can actually achieve if we try. But if we put in a little more effort,
many of the things we think that we cannot achieve or overcome may actually be within our reach.
Perseverance means going ahead until we reach our goal. This means not giving up even when there are
difficulties.
Let us face our fears and unreachable dreams together. Complete the sentences below. Afterwards,
evaluate your answers. How can we conquer these fears? How can perseverance will help us?

3 DAY: Importance of Perseverance
In this lesson, we will expand your knowledge and help you understand the importance of perseverance in
any situation or aspect.
Perseverance is the ability and self-control that pushes you to work through challenges. Having
perseverance means that when you are facing a challenge, you use your mind and your body to overcome it.
It’s important to point out that the definition of perseverance is not “don’t give up no matter what”
or “never quit”. Sometimes you’ll do your best but it will still be time to move on to a different goal.
However, perseverance is the ability to do your best toward a goal, even though it’s a big challenge. We can
use perseverance in different aspects in our lives. Take a look and read the examples thoroughly.
Perseverance in School
You’re doing school work and it’s your hardest subject. Maybe it’s a difficult math problem, or a long essay,
or maybe you have to stand up in front of the class and present. Whatever it is for you, it’s tough. You’re
struggling. You’re not sure you can do it. Maybe you even want to give up. You think about taking the easy
way out and just doing the least you have to, even though you know it won’t be right. But you know the
work needs to get done and you know you have to do your best work. So, you try harder. You stick with it
and after some frustration and focus, you do it! You got it done and did it to the best of your ability.
Perseverance in Sports
It’s preseason for your favorite sport and you’re trying to prove yourself and make the team. You’ve been
practicing for hours and you’re tired. You start to wonder if you can really do it. You think it would be easier
just to quit.
But you really want to make the team. So, you take a deep breath, shake out your muscles, and you try
harder. You get your mind and body focused, and do your best, despite being tired. You tried out last year
and didn’t make it. You waited all year and worked hard to get better, and now you are going to prove it.
pg. 3
Perseverance in Friendships
You said something hurtful by mistake, and now your friend is mad at you. She’s giving you nasty looks and
telling everyone else what happened. You feel bad that you said it, but now she’s being so mean. Your
heart really hurts at the whole situation, but going and apologizing or trying to talk about how she’s hurting
you is just so awkward. You think it would be easier just to ignore her, or maybe even tell your friends how
she’s being so mean so they won’t side with her. Then you realize that if you don’t talk it out, you’ll lose
your friend forever. If you don’t apologize, you’ll keep feeling guilty. You figure out what needs to be done,
and you walk over to your friend. Even though it’s so uncomfortable, you do the right thing and apologize.
No matter what the challenge, perseverance is important because it is the drive that helps you get
through the obstacle to the easier bit on the other side. Even though it feels so hard when you are working
through a challenge, perseverance keeps pushing you through to your goal and to the good feeling that
comes with knowing you did your best.
At the end of the day, there is no shortcut in achieving your goals. Always remember that every
step you take is valid, no matter how small or big it is.
