Study of Maintenance Requirements and System Upgrading of Narayani Lift Irrigation
System (Pumping Station-A)
BACKGROUND
Narayani Lift Irrigation System (NLIS) having command area of 4,700 ha. is one of the lift
irrigation systems of Nepal, which provides irrigation to the upper terraces of Narayani River in
the vicinity of Bharatpur Metropolitian. The system was initially constructed in 1982 in the
name of Chitawan Valley Development Project (CVDP) by the Department of Irrigation, which
included three irrigation schemes Panchakanya, Lothar and Narayani Lift. The project was also
envisaged to supplement Khageri Irrigation System having command area of 3,900 ha. The
project was commissioned in 1982 and was operational since in the name of Narayani Lift
Irrigation System (NLIS). The NLIS has two staged pump and two canal systems: canal-B and
canal-C.
The link canal which joins pump house-A and pump house-B is 500 m in length. The main canal-
B bifurcates just upstream of pump house-B while pump house-B lifts water to canal-C. The
canal-B system irrigates to 2,400 ha of land in middle terrace through a 19.50 km long main
canal and 9 numbers of branch canals. The canal-C system irrigates to 2,300 ha of land in upper
terrace through a 16.50 km long main canal and 7 numbers of branch canals. The system was
developed up to command area level with tertiary canals to serve an irrigation block of about
100 ha.
The system is operating with difficulty as frequent break down of the electrical and mechanical
parts occur. In addition, there are various deficiencies in the electro mechanical equipments,
and also problems of sediment influx in to the canals system. The system is hardly operational
during the rainy season only for the paddy crops when the sediment content in the river water
is high. The pumps are unable to operate during low flow in the winter and spring season.
MAJOR ELECTRO-MECHANICAL EQUIPMENTS IN PUMPING SYSTEMS:
Pump Station "A" is adjacent to the wall and suction sump is located after the intake canal. The
sediment flows into the canal during monsoon season (July–October) at the average intake
water height of 97.0 m. Because of the short distance from inlet to suction sump, a large amount

of soil flows into the sump and it produces an undesirable effect on the pump operation. Pump-
B lifts water from the link canal up to 18 m height to canal-C. Detail specification of
Electromechanical Equipment at pumping station A are:
Pumping station A:
Pump No. I and II: Model 900VM4B10, Vertical Mixed Flow Pump(Capacity 2m3/sec) with
11KV, 750KW Slip Ring Induction Motor
Pump No. III and IV: Model 1050VM3A12, Vertical Mixed Flow Pump(Capacity 4m3/sec)
with 11KV,1200KW Slip Ring Induction Motor
Pump No. V: Model 750T3B6 Turbine Pump(Capacity 1m3/sec) with 11KV,330KW Slip Ring
Induction Motor
Future pump: Model 1050VM3A12, Vertical Mixed Flow Pump(Capacity 4m3/sec) with
11KV,1200KW Slip Ring Induction Motor
Pump House A is equipped with nine panel, 11KV, 630MVA, Type PA3, High Tension Switch
Board with 11KV supply from overhead transmission line by 2x3x300 sq.mm Aluminum
PILC cables.
Narayani Lift Irrigation project intends to use 400KVA, 11KV/415V step down transformer of
pump house B for low voltage supply to LT Switch Board of both pump house A & B and the
400KVA transformer of pump house A for low voltage power supply to LT switch boards of
pump house A & B as well so that one transformer will be a stand-by unit.
