1. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
(1x4=4)
The common names of some aliphatic carboxylic acids are derived from Greek or
Latin names of their natural sources (Plant or animal product) from which they were
first isolated, for example formic acid was first obtained by the distillation of red
ants.
The acidic strength of carboxylic acids is greater than that of phenols and alcohols,
the acidic strength of acids depend upon the stability of conjugate base formed by
acids after losing proton, more the stability of the formed conjugate base, more the
strength of acid. The stability of Conjugate base depends upon many factors like
resonance and presence of electron withdrawing or electron donating groups. The
presence of electron withdrawing groups increase the acidity while the presence of
electron donating groups decreases the acidic strength.

Colloidal solutions are intermediate between true solutions and suspensions, the
size of the colloidal particles range from 1 to 1000 nm. In formation of colloidal
solution adsorption takes place. The colloidal solution consists the two phases,
dispersed phase and dispersion medium, the dispersed phase is adsorbed at the
surface of dispersion medium. The colloidal solutions show many optical,
mechanical and electrical properties. Many phenomena in our daily life are due to
some special properties of colloids.
