LANGUAGE
THE JAPANESE HAS A VERY COMPLEX AND WIDE RANGED
KIND OF LANGUAGE. IN THE EARLY DAYS (252 AD), THE
JAPANESE LANGUAGE WAS FIRST COMPILED. THEY HAVE 3
KINDS OF WRITING THEIR LANGUAGE; HIRAGANA,
KATAKANA, AND KANJI
HIRAGANA
HIRAGANA IS A JAPANESE SYLLABARY, ONE COMPONENT
OF THE JAPANESE WRITING SYSTEM, ALONG WITH
KATAKANA, KANJI, AND IN SOME CASES RŌMAJI. IT IS A
PHONETIC LETTERING SYSTEM. THE WORD HIRAGANA
LITERALLY MEANS "ORDINARY" OR "SIMPLE"
KATAKANA
KATAKANA IS A JAPANESE SYLLABARY, ONE COMPONENT
OF THE JAPANESE WRITING SYSTEM ALONG WITH
HIRAGANA, KANJI, AND IN SOME CASES THE LATIN SCRIPT.
KANJI
Kanji are the adopted logographic Chinese
characters that are used in the Japanese
writing system. They are used alongside the
Japanese syllabic scripts hiragana and
katakana. The Japanese term kanji for the
Chinese characters literally means "Han
characters".

SHINTOISM
SHINTOISM IS AN ETHNIC RELIGION THAT FOCUSES ON
CEREMONIES AND RITUALS. IN SHINTOISM, FOLLOWERS

CHINA AND KOREA. IT ARRIVED IN JAPAN DURING THE 6TH
CENTURY CE, WHERE IT WAS INITIALLY UNPOPULAR.

USES TOPPINGS SUCH AS SLICED PORK, DRIED SEAWEED,

TEMPURA

TEMPURA IS A JAPANESE DISH USUALLY CONSISTING OF


SEAFOOD OR VEGETABLES THAT HAVE BEEN BATTERED AND
DEEP FRIED.
YAKITORI
YAKITORI IS A JAPANESE TYPE OF SKEWERED CHICKEN. ITS
PREPARATION INVOLVES SKEWERING THE MEAT WITH KUSHI, A TYPE OF
SKEWER TYPICALLY MADE OF STEEL, BAMBOO, OR SIMILAR MATERIALS.
AFTERWARDS, THEY ARE GRILLED OVER A CHARCOAL FIRE. DURING OR
AFTER COOKING, THE MEAT IS TYPICALLY SEASONED WITH TARE SAUCE
OR SALT.
OKONOMIYAKI
OKONOMIYAKI (LITERALLY MEANS ‘GRILLED AS YOU LIKE IT’) IS A
SAVORY VERSION OF JAPANESE PANCAKE, MADE WITH FLOUR, EGGS,
SHREDDED CABBAGE, MEAT/ PROTEIN AND TOPPED WITH A VARIETY OF
CONDIMENTS. BETTER KNOWN AS ‘JAPANESE PIZZA’ IN THE US, YOU CAN
DEFINITELY PREPARE THE FILLING AND TOPPINGS HOWEVER YOU LIKE IT.
A WONDERFUL WAY TO USE UP YOUR LEFTOVERS!
KARE RAISU (RICE WITH CURRY)
ALSO A VERY POPULAR, SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS DISH
THAT WE CAN FIND IN JAPAN. KARE RAISU IS JUST
RICE WITH CURRY BUT THE TASTE IS DIFFERENT
FROM THE TO MAKE THE JAPANESE CURRY, IT IS USED
A VARIETY OF MEATS AND VEGETABLES. THE BASICS
VEGETABLES ARE ONIONS, CARROTS AND SWEET
POTATOS, AND THE MEATS USED ARE CHICKEN, PORK,
BEEF AND SOMETIMES DUCK. 
MISO SOUP
MISO SOUP IT IS SERVED AS A SIDE DISH IN MOSTLY EVERY
MEAL AND WITH ALMOST EVERY DISH. IT IS A SOUP MADE FROM
A MISO PASTE (FERMENTED SOYBEANS) AND DASHI (THE
CONSOMME). INSIDE THIS KIND OF BASE SOUP, YOU WILL FIND
PIECES OF TOFU, ONION WAKANE SEAWEED, AND SOMETIMES
VEGETABLES LIKE SWEET POTATOS, CARROTS AND RADISH. IT IS
NEVER SERVED AS A MAIN DISH. IT ALWAYS COMES WITH A
BOWL OF RICE AND ONE OR 2 MORE DISHES.

A YUKATA ( 浴衣 ) IS A JAPANESE GARMENT, A CASUAL
SUMMER KIMONO[1] USUALLY MADE OF COTTON OR
SYNTHETIC FABRIC, AND UNLINED.
HAKAMA
HAKAMA ( 袴 ) ARE A TYPE OF TRADITIONAL 
JAPANESE CLOTHING. TROUSERS WERE USED BY THE
CHINESE IMPERIAL COURT IN THE SUI AND TANG DYNASTIES,
AND THIS STYLE WAS ADOPTED BY THE JAPANESE IN THE
FORM OF HAKAMA BEGINNING IN THE SIXTH CENTURY.

BOWING
Bowing is used for a variety of reasons in Japanese
tradition including greetings, sports, religion and a show
of thanks. For each occasion the bow is slightly different,
it can vary from a slight bow to a deep bow however for
tourists a traditional hand shake is accepted

SUMO WRESTLING IS WIDELY POPULAR AMONG THE JAPANESE. IN MANY
SUMO STADIUMS THERE WILL BE A TATAMI AREA FOR PEOPLE TO SIT. TATAMI
IS AN AREA OF SOFT MATS WHICH ARE POPULAR WITH PEOPLE SITTING AND
SLEEPING ON- ALTHOUGH AT THE SUMO NO ONE WILL BE SLEEPING! ON THE
TATAMI AREA, REVELLERS WILL BE GIVEN ZABUTON PILLOWS TO SIT ON AND
ITS COMMON TRADITION THAT IF PEOPLE ARE FRUSTRATED WITH THE SUMO
THAT THEY WILL THROW THEIR ZABUTON INTO THE RING.
KAMPAI
THE FIRST RULE OF DRINKING IN JAPAN IS TO KAMPAI, THAT’S CHEERS
TO YOU AND ME. IN ENGLAND, AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD,
CHEERS IS USED MORE FOR A CELEBRATION THAN JUST FOR A TYPICAL
FRIDAY NIGHT. IN JAPAN, SAYING KAMPAI BEFORE DRINKING IS
IMPORTANT AND IS SEEN AS RUDE IF IGNORED.

THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE HAS A SINGLE WORD FOR

A FESTIVAL THAT INVOLVES BURNING THE VEGETATION
FROM A MOUNTAIN BEFORE SPRING. THESE CAN BE
VISUALLY STUNNING AND ARE OFTEN COMBINED WITH A
FIREWORKS SHOW. VARIOUS STORIES ARE USED TO
EXPLAIN HOW THE TRADITION BEGAN INCLUDING ANCIENT
LAND DISPUTES AND PROBLEMS WITH WILD BOARS.
LOVE LOCKS
ANY SPOT IN JAPAN THAT'S CONSIDERED ROMANTIC SUCH AS

WORLD. TORO NAGASHI CEREMONIES ARE ALSO USED TO
COMMEMORATE TRAGIC EVENTS SUCH AS THE 
ATOMIC BOMBING OF HIROSHIMA.
SITTING SEIZA
SEIZA IS A TRADITIONAL WAY TO SIT ON JAPANESE TATAMI FLOORS. IT'S
CONSIDERED THE APPROPRIATE WAY TO SIT AT FORMAL OCCASIONS
SUCH AS RITUALS AT A SHINTO SHRINE. IT'S ALSO WIDELY USED IN
JAPANESE MARTIAL ARTS WHERE POSTURE MAY BE STRICTLY
CORRECTED. THE AVERAGE PERSON FINDS SEIZA CHALLENGING TO HOLD
FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. OLDER PEOPLE AND ANYONE WHO ISN'T
PRACTICED AT IT FIND IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND ARE TYPICALLY

CURRENT YEAR AND IT'S THOUGHT TO BE BAD LUCK TO HOLD ON
