CONCEPT OF SELF HEALTH
INTRODUCTION:

Health –
Health is a concept which does not merely relate to the absence of disease, of healthy working of
organs, or having good thoughts. Health is a holistic concept. The concepts of health include;
physical health, mental health and emotional or social health. The three concepts are interrelated and
referred to as healthy.

DEFINITION:
"A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity.”
Acc. to World Health Organization (WHO)

“Health definition is - the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit; especially freedom from
physical disease or pain. How to use health in a sentence.”
Acc. to Merriam-Webster
Goal and purpose of self health:
 It is an important aspect of health that the body and mind are well, both in order and function.
 A person feels well, then he or she is healthy.
 Well being or absence of ill being is an important trait in health.
 Absence of disease.
 A state of optimal physical, mental and social adaptation to ones environment.

Type of health:
1. physical health
2. mental health
3. social health
4. spiritual health
5. environmental health
6. psychosocial health

 Physical health

1. Physical health:

 Physical health is essential to the complete health of an individual; this includes


everything from overall well-being to physical fitness. It can also be defined as a state of
physical well-being in which the individual is able to perform daily activities without
problems.

2. Mental health:

 mental health A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual


is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet
the ordinary demands of everyday life.
 A person's overall emotional and psychological condition: Since witnessing the accident,
his mental health has been poor

3. Social health :

 Social health is one's ability to form meaningful personal relationships with others. It is
also an indication of one's ability to manage in social situations and behave accordingly.

4.Spiritual health:

 Spiritual health is a highly individualized concept that is measured by the amount of


peace and harmony an individual experiences in his day-to-day life. Spiritual health
fluctuates greatly by the amount of time an individual uses to develop personal spiritual
values

5. Environmental health:

 Environmental health is the branch of public health concerned with all aspects of the
natural and built environment affecting human health. Environmental health is focused on
the natural and built environments for the benefit of human health.

6. Psychosocial health:

 Psychosocial health is an evaluation of the mental state resulting from life experiences
and maladjusted cognitive and behavioral processes; in short, the psychological and social
factors of life.

The Activities of Daily Living (ADLs):

 ADLs are uses as a measurement of a person’s functional status.


 First proposed in 1950 by Sidney katz who develop the first evaluation tool called the katz
ADL scale.
 ADL consist of basic ADLs and instrumental ADLs
 Basic ADLs are more essential for survival than IADLs.
 Instrumental ADLs are not necessary for fundamental functioning , but they let an individual
live independently in a community.
The basic Activities of Daily Living:
 The basic activities of daily living are a series of basic activities performed by individuals on
a daily basis necessary for independent living at home or in the community.
 There are many variations on the definition of the activities of daily living, but most
organizations agree there are 5 basic categories:
1) Personal hygiene – bathing/showering, grooming, nail care, and oral care.

2) Dressing - the ability to make appropriate clothing decisions and physically


dress/undress oneself.

3) Eating - the ability to feed oneself, though not necessarily the capability to prepare
food.

4) Maintaining continence - both the mental and physical capacity to use a restroom,
including the ability to get on and off the toilet and cleaning oneself.

5) Transferring/Mobility- moving oneself from seated to standing, getting in and out of


bed, and the ability to walk independently from one location to another.

The Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs):

 Instrumental Activities of Daily Living are actions that are important to being able to live
independently, but are not necessarily required activities on a daily basis.
 The instrumental activities are not as noticeable as the Activities of Daily Living when it
comes to loss of functioning, but functional ability for IADLs is generally lost prior to ADLs.
 IADLs can help determine with greater detail the level of assistance required by an elderly or
disabled person. The IADLs include:
1. Basic communication skills - such as using a regular phone, mobile phone, email, or the Internet
2. Transportation - either by driving oneself, arranging rides, or the ability to use public
transportation
3. Meal preparation - meal planning, cooking, clean up, storage, and the ability to safely use kitchen
equipment and utensils
4. Shopping - the ability to make appropriate food and clothing purchase decisions
5. Housework - doing laundry, washing dishes, dusting, vacuuming, and maintaining a hygienic
place of residence
6. Managing medications - taking accurate dosages at the appropriate times, managing re-fills, and
avoiding conflicts
7. Managing personal finances - operating within a budget, writing checks, paying bills, and avoiding
scams

Activities of Daily Living Checklist:

 ADLs measurement in relation with health status :


(a) Requires no assistance – person is independent i.e. healthy
(b) Some assistance needed- partially dependent.
(c) Complete assistance needed – dependent on other for work i.e. unhealthy.

1. Biomedical concept:
 Traditionally health has been viewed as an “absence of disease ’’ and if one was free from
disease then the person was considered healthy. This is biomedical concept.
2. Ecological concept:
 Health implies relative absence of pain and discomfort and a adaptation to the
environment to ensure optimal function.
 This viewed health as a dynamic equilibrium between man and his environment.
3. Psychological concept:
 Development in the field of social sciences revealance that health is not only a
biomedical phenomenon, one which is influenced by social psychological, cultural,
economic and political factors of people concerned.
4. Holistic concept :
 Synthesis of all the above concepts recognized strength of social, economic, political
and environment influences on health.
 This approach implies that all sectors of society have an effect on health, in particular
animal food, industry, education, housing, public society other sectors.

5. Spiritual concept:
 Profound awareness appreciation of truth and a sense of basis. Communication with
the higher power enlightenment.

New philosophy of health:


 Fundamental right
 Intersectoral
 Integral part of development
 Central to quality of life
 Social investment
 Worldwide social goal
 Involves individual, families, communities, local, national and international
responsibilities.

Nurses responsibility:
 To explain and educate them the importance of balance diet.
 To assist the being in doing exercise for staying healthy.
 To help them to know about their vocational hazards and what safety measures should a
person take.
 To explain about the non-therapeutic techniques for relaxation of the body e. g. meditation,
yoga.
 To explain them about model of an healthy lifestyle behaviour and attitude.
 Guide client development in effective problem solving and decision making.

SUMMARY:
Let`s summarize the topic “concept of self health” introduce the health, definition, goal and
purposes of health, type of health, activity of daily living- basic and instrumental activity of daily
living, concept of health , modern philosophy of health and nursing responsibility.

CONCLUSION:

Health is a concept which does not merely relate to the absence of disease, of healthy working of
organs, or having good thoughts. Health is a holistic concept. The concepts of health include;
physical health, mental health and emotional or social health. The three concepts are interrelated and
referred to as healthy.
