“YMAA Publication Center was established so that Westerners
could access the profound Oriental developments in Qi,
Martial Arts, and Spiritual Cultivation. As one of the pioneers
in this exchange, YMAA will continue to mark the path

uu
between East and West. It is our hope that this path will help
lead to a new, benevolent society.”
– Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming

uu
About 25 Years Ago: Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming had completed fifteen months
of part-time operation of Yang’s Martial Arts Academy, and was planning
for YMAA Publication Center. With four published books and a letter of
resignation from an engineering career, he went to full-time teaching and
launched YMAA Publication Center.

uu
Moving from a small second-floor studio to a stand-alone building in
Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, YMAA and its affiliations flourished. The
Publication Center eventually relocated to its own nearby facility.
A few years ago YMAA Publication Center, Inc. relocated to New Hampshire, Dr. Yang began

uu
his non-profit YMAA California Retreat Center, and Nicholas C. Yang was appointed President
of YMAA International.
Our solid foundation and strong root assure me that the next twenty-five years of YMAA and its
affiliations will be as exciting and productive as the past. Congratulations to all YMAA family,
friends, and supporters.

Wudang Taijiquan
Zhan-Zhuang, Sequence, and
Martial Applications
Performed by Zhou, Xuan-Yun
and Senior YMAA Students

Learn the Mysterious Art of Wudang Taiji

Beautiful Wudang Mountain is the world’s largest
Daoist center, dating back 2,000 years. It spans 321
square kilometers with 72 peaks, dozens of archi-
tectural masterpieces, many lakes, rivers, and a for-
est which still sustains over 600 known medicinal
herbs. Daoism is an ancient Chinese philosophy
that teaches its practitioners to live a peaceful,
refined life in harmony with nature. Centuries ago,
Daoist philosophy, such as yin/yang theory, was
adopted into the martial arts trained by the monks
of the Wudang monasteries, and Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) was created.
Taijiquan, or ‘Grand Ultimate Fist,’ combines the internal skills of yang
sheng (life nourishing) with ancient fighting techniques. Practiced
slowly, Taijiquan is a set of gentle, flowing movements which promotes
exceptional health and well-being. Taijiquan emphasizes the develop-
ment of a strong root, proper body alignment, efficient movement, and
a calm and relaxed mind and body. The application of Taijiquan reveals
it is an effective martial art specializing in using softness to overcome
hardness, uprooting the opponent, redirecting incoming force, and
DEC 09
striking vital points.
This program discusses the history of Wudang Taijiquan, offers a
Warm Up section, and teaches the essential skill of Zhan-Zhuang, or
standing meditation, which develops the Qi (energy) throughout your
body. The complete 108-posture Wudang Taijiquan sequence is
demonstrated in its entirety, and instructed piece by piece, with mar-
tial applications. Each technique is taught and demonstrated in detail,
making it easy for the viewer to learn.
The ancient art of Wudang Taijiquan has much wisdom to offer begin-
ners and experienced Tai Chi practitioners of all styles.

Tengu
The Mountain Goblin
A Novel

By John Donohue, Ph.D.

“A famous physicist once said that it’s impossible to

examine the world objectively; the very act of looking
disturbs the gossamer filaments that bind the universe
together and, as a result, they vibrate with unantici-
pated harmonics. Our mere existence changes every-
thing.
I have come to believe this. I don’t think I could have
ever anticipated the events that would have brought
me somewhere far from my home, facing death beside
the one person I most admired in the world. Looking
back, it is as if we were drawn to that place by a chain
that, for all its invisibility, was stronger than the steel
sword that my master taught me to wield.

Fiction through
the eyes of
martial artists
”Here’s what you need to under-
stand about cutting. It’s not about
violence, it’s about facilitation; it’s
not about imposing your will on
something, it’s about helping
molecules spontaneously divide.
When you do this right, you’re
working at the level of atomic
bonds. It’s quantum; see? Your
intention affects your target
through the medium of your
sword, and encourages the bonds
to surrender. Maybe it’s the
carbon we share with steel that
makes it such a good transmitter.
Maybe that’s why a good sword,
the right sword, feels special to
us. Anyway, it doesn’t matter how
it works; it just matters that it
does. Without intention, cutting
is more difficult because you’re
using sheer power; with intention,
every cut is a seduction.”

KATA AND THE TRANSMISSION

Michael Rosenbaum
It is the transmission of martial knowledge, through kata and other
forms of communication that this book explores. The author reveals
that prearranged fighting techniques were used by ancient Greeks,
Egyptian, Asian, and European societies. That poetry, dance, and song
were significant methods of preserving and transmitting battle-tested
tactics through the ages. Impressive sourcing and endnotes.

MARTIAL WAY AND ITS VIRTUES—Tao De Gung

F. J. Chu
While the martial arts revolve around the way of personal combat, it
also demands that its adherents live in accordance with a certain war-
rior code of conduct and honor. The martial way promises a long and
arduous journey. It is an invitation to the subordination of self, the
endurance of sustained practice, and the cultivation of the body and
mind, with no tolerance for self-indulgences of any kind. Martial arts
without compassion and honor promises only violence. Stripped of its
spirituality, it threatens injury and suffering to both its victims and its
practitioners. In the end, this higher ideal is what separates the warrior
from the predator.

THE WAY OF SANCHIN KATA—The Application of Power

Kris Wilder
When Karate or “Ti” was first developed in Okinawa it was about using
technique and extraordinary power to end a fight instantly. These old
ways of generating remarkable power are still accessible, but they are
purposefully hidden in Sanchin Kata for the truly dedicated to find.
This book takes the practitioner to new depths of practice by breaking
down the form piece-by-piece, body part by body part, so that the very
foundation of the kata is revealed.
A Test It section, designed for you to explore and verify the kata for
yourself, accompanies every chapter, concept, and application. No
other document, or video, available today provides such depth and
exploration of Sanchin Kata. Simply put, once you read this book and
test what you have learned, your Karate will never be the same.

THE WAY OF KATA—A Comprehensive Guide

to Deciphering Martial Applications
Lawrence A. Kane and Kris Wilder
The ancient masters developed kata as fault-tolerant methods to pre-
serve their unique, combat-proven fighting systems. Unfortunately,
they deployed a two-track system of instruction where ‘outer circle’
students received modified forms with critical details or important
principles omitted, and the select ‘inner circle’ students would be
taught okuden waza, the powerful hidden applications of kata.
This groundbreaking book unveils the methods of teaching you how
to analyze your kata, to understand what it is trying to tell you. It also
helps you to utilize your fighting techniques more effectively—both in
self-defense and in tournament applications. Offers fifteen general
principles to identify effective techniques, and twelve discrete rules for
deciphering martial applications within your kata.

THE WAY OF KENDO AND KENJITSU—Soul of the Samurai

times described as Sport Kendo, does. This is the difference between
the two. This book addresses advance level Kendo skills including

• Damages Due to Carrier: If you receive a shipment that contains damages because the boxes were “hurt,” please notify us immediately!
(800) 669-8892. SAVE THE BOXES! because we might have to show the shipper before we can file a claim.
• Damages Due to Packing: If you receive a shipment from us that was poorly packed, you can return the books for an exchange or credit.
Poorly Packed means that the carton arrived in good shape but the product inside was bent/broken/scratched due to them sliding around.
Call (800) 669-8892 for instructions or you can follow the return instructions on the back of your invoice. Refund for Domestic Parcel Post
only. There is no credit issued until the products are received in the warehouse.
• Misships & Shortages: When this happens, it is a problem for everyone. Please notify us within 30 days. Call 800 669-8892 or follow the
instructions on your invoice.
• Lost Shipments:
Domestic Customers: Orders shipped via UPS can be easily traced. Contact us and we will begin the search. Orders shipped via Post Office
are more difficult to trace. Please allow an extra two weeks for lost Post Office shipments. They usually get delivered!
International Customers: Please be patient, missing Post Office shipments have been known to arrive 3 weeks late! They usually get
delivered! Even if your order is insured, tracing and collecting can take up to 12 months from the post office.
• Exchanges: Give us a call at (800) 669-8892 to request a Return Authorization Number for the exchange.
• Return Authorization: Return Authorizations are annoying, but in order to keep track, they must be issued. To speed up the process, give us
a call. (Or follow the instructions on your invoice). Save the invoice number! A Return Authorization will be issued only after the knowing the
reason for the return (poorly packed/defective product/exchange). A credit will be issued when the product is received in our warehouse. No
unauthorized returns will be accepted. All products returnable (in unused condition) for up to 30 days from time of receipt. Additional
