Start and stop problems, fault tracing

Symptom fault tracing

General information

When fault tracing, select the symptom that best matches the fault on the vehicle. Fault tracing should be carried out in
the order described in the information for each symptom. This makes fault tracing more efficient by systematically
eliminating or documenting faults that can be the cause of a symptom.

Contents

General information
The engine does not start
Engine difficult to start
Engine starts but will not run
The engine stops unexpectedly or dies during retarding
Engine cuts out intermittently
Engine does not shut off

Note: Before fault tracing is started, chock the wheels and release the parking brake.

Note: During fault tracing, the engine should be run at the operating temperature as well as at the temperature where
the symptom occurs.

Dependent on the vehicle's configuration, the conditions relating to problems starting and stopping can occur or be
caused by faults or malfunctions in other vehicle components. Examples of these are: batteries, immobiliser, body
builder adaptions etc.
Problems when starting or stopping can be caused by abnormal engine conditions, including fuel supply, air inlet/outlet
or faults with the engine control system. Therefore, fault tracing should be based on components related to these
systems.

Fault tracing

Temporary faults can be difficult to trace as the fault may not occur when the vehicle is checked.

Fault tracing should be based on the driver's understanding of the fault. The information that the driver provides
together with the factual data collected should form the basis for how the problem is to be resolved.

If possible, try to recreate the problem in an environment and situation that is equivalent to that described by the driver.

Begin by determining whether anything has recently happened to the vehicle that could affect to the electrical system,
but which is not related to the engine control system.

The engine does not start

There is no ignition in any of the cylinders despite repeated attempts. This can be caused by:

Fuel not properly injected into cylinders.

Abnormal conditions on the exhaust side.

Step 1: Fault code readings

Active and inactive fault codes registered can point to faults, but can also be useful in tracing the cause of a symptom.
Freeze frames with information of specific fault codes can also be useful when searching for symptom causes.

Fault tracing, using relevant service information, must always be carried out for relevant fault codes. Components

The results of the following tests, carried out using VCADS Pro, can show which systems or which components can be
the cause of the symptom. These tests can also eliminate components or systems with no faults or malfunctions.

Cylinder compression, test

Fuel supply pressure, check (when driving using the starter motor)
Sensor value check, stationary engine
Auxiliary brake, test (D9A, D12D, D16C)
Note: If the exhaust brake is applied, compression cannot build up in the cylinders, which means that the engine does
not start. Applies to vehicles equipped with VCB.

Note: If the exhaust brake is applied, compression cannot build up in the cylinders, which means that the engine does
not start. Applies to vehicles equipped with VCB.

Note: If a fault arises when the starter motor is turned, this can affect starting the engine. Check fault codes for starter
motor speed.

Step 4: Component and function checks

The following checks should be carried out in the specified order until the fault is found. These checks also can help
eliminate components with no faults or malfunctions. The number of tests and the sequence depends on the following:
the results from tests and fault codes; the vehicle's condition; the vehicle's service and repair history; other symptoms
and information from the driver.
