when the word is the subject of a clause:
Swimming is good exercise.
Doctors say that smoking is bad for you.
after a preposition:
I look forward to meeting you.
They left without saying goodbye.
I dislike getting up early.

-ing Form
We make the -ing form by adding -ing to the base verb and adjusting the
spelling as necessary:
work → working
sit → sitting
smoke → smoking
Sometimes the -ing form can also have an object itself. In this case, the
whole expression [-ing + object] can be the subject, object or complement
of a clause or sentence.
I want to eat.
I dislike eating.
