AbbVie Builds a Global Systems Infrastructure

AbbVie was facing competition from other pharmaceuticals and biotechnology

companies involved in the manufacture and selling of proprietary pharmaceutical products.

These competitors introduced new products and technological innovations that were cheaper in

comparison to AbbVie's products in areas such as therapy, neuroscience, virology, and

dyslipidemia. As such, AbbVie had to come up with a solution to thwart the competition it was

facing as it had a negative impact on its profitability. To solve this, AbbVie reinvented its

product in a manner in which the consumer could differentiate its product compared to the

generic brands from its competitors. Failure to undertake such a drastic move would significantly

impact AbbVie's cost not just in sales but also on consumer confidence.

AbbVie has implemented an information technology infrastructure to bolster its key

business processes that encompass manufacturing process control, accounting, and reporting,

customer service, distribution, and inventory control. AbbVie's information technology

infrastructure is geared to replace Abbott's information technology services to avert interruptions

in its operations as it implements the new systems. Failure to enforce a critical information

technology infrastructure could harm its biologics infrastructure and manufacturing that are

essential to produce its biologic products, which ultimately negatively affect its ability to gather

receivables from consumers.

AbbVie has sophisticated information systems to run its business. It has invested a lot of

money to safeguard the systems against data loss through a random attack, malicious intrusion,

and breakdown. AbbVie also monitors its systems frequently to ensure that there are no

breakdowns or breaches in its information technology systems that could adversely impact its

business processes.
