Paan is a mixture of various ingredients, including areca nut, slaked lime, spices, seeds and may contain
tobacco depending on the user, all wrapped together in a betel leaf or pre-packaged in foil.

Use of gutka and paan masala is reported among South Asian immigrants in the United Kingdom, South
and East Africa, and in parts of Europe and Australia.
 Somebody told them this paan it's like human being, leaf is their tongue and nut is their heart and lime is
their brain.” One key informant interviewee stated: “Because growing up and our culture, in our tradition,
whenever we have visitors or guests at home, [paan masala] is something we offer as a refreshment to
your visitor or guest. That's how the tradition started. Just like people give you juice or apple in this
country. It's more like a refreshment.” Another key informant interviewee stated: “In our culture and back
home in our village, everybody eats [paan masala or gutka]. So then it's more like a friendly gesture, that
you offer this to a friend.

• Zarda – is a mixture of tobacco, lime, spices, and occasionally, silver flakes is also added to pan
and chewed

• Preparation - Zarda is prepared by cutting tobacco leaves into small pieces and boiling them in
water with slaked lime and spices until the water evaporates. It is then dried, and coloring and
flavoring agents are added. Zarda may be chewed by itself, with areca nut or in betel leaf

• Basic Raw Material - Tobacco leave, Lime, Peppermint, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Vegetable Dyes,
Flavors, Preservatives

• Formulation -Tobacco leaves - 60%, Lime - 15%, Peppermint - 7%, Cardamom - 5%, Cinnamon -
5%, Vegetable Dye - 6%, Flavors - 1%, Preservatives - 1%

• Process - Tobacco leaves should be bright lemon or light orange color with fine texture and body
should be free from sponginess, scalding, brushing or other bluish. Leaves should be dried in a
Tray Dryer by maintaining temperature 80°C – 90°C by hot air such that leaves contains less than
6% moisture. Now take the above mentioned ingredients by weight. Dry tobacco leaves are kept
in the horizontal mixing tank. Add lime powder over the dry leaves and mix the product for 20-
30 minutes and then add glycerol and kimam (It is a mixture of masala spices) over the mixer.
Mix the mixture for 20 minutes. After proper mixing, the products are taken in the holding
tanks. Now add perfume & silver flakes over it. Check the quality of the Zarda. Pack the product
in the printed pouches/tin containers with the help of automatic packing machine. Now Zarda
Ratna 300 type is ready for marketing.
