Geolog® 7 – Paradigm™ 2011 Xplot Basics 1-1

With Epos® 4.1 Data Management
Overview
A Xplot view is used to create and format crossplots. Single or multiwell crossplots can be created in either
a 2D or 3D view.
Xplot is used to:
• crossplot logs or log expressions with a variety of analytical tools available to incorporate
standard contractor or user defined curves, polygons and charts
• pick points, for example, matrix and shale points
• create ternary diagrams to calculate fractional logs
• use pickett plots to calculate water saturation logs
• perform regression analysis
• highlight values for easy identification in various views, in both 2D and 3D
• calculate new logs

Starting Xplot

Xplot document views are created or opened via the “New Tab” on page 1-15 or the File menu of the Geolog
application, such as Well or Geosteer.
See “Creating New” on page 1-13 or “Opening” on page 1-14 for further details.

Xplot Window
Crossplots are viewed and formatted in the Xplot window. The well(s) to be crossplotted are selected via the
the application (e.g.Well or Geosteer) File menu—see the help for the application for information on
opening a well or wells to process.
Fig. 1 is an example of a Xplot window.

Table 1-1: Xplot Window Components
Component Description
Titles The titles of a crossplot may consist of up to four lines of fixed and/or variable
text. See “Titles” on page 2-39 for further information.
Statistics Diagram The “Statistics Diagram” on page 2-46 shows X and Y axis expression values
within and outside the limits of the crossplot.
Border The line surrounding the crossplot drawing area. The line style can be formatted
by double clicking on the line (or by selecting Edit > Properties and clicking on

the button) to display the Border dialog box (see “Format Display”
on page 4-17).
Points Insert “Insert Point” on page 3-17 to generate X, Y and Z values in a crossplot at
required locations.
Grid “X, Y, and Z Axes” on page 2-4 grid lines (Z axis not shown).
Graphical Display Box The area containing the crossplot. See “Ancillaries” on page 2-43 and “Format
Display” on page 4-17.
Functions An element inserted on the crossplot such as a chart, polygon or curve. See
“Functions” on page 2-37 for further information.
Values Symbols on the Xplot display identifying the X and Y expression values from the
well(s). See “Color” on page 2-13 and “Filter” on page 2-30 for further details.
X axis log expression The selected X, Y and Z axis log expressions and units. See “X, Y, and Z Axes” on
Y axis log expression page 2-4, “Working in 3D Xplot” on page 4-1 and “Ancillaries” on page 2-43.
Z axis log expression (not shown)
Color axis The selected Color bar, Color Expression and/or Symbol Expression (not shown)
are referred to as the Color Axis. See “Color” on page 2-13 and “Ancillaries” on
page 2-43.
Legends The names and descriptions of selected functions (Function Legend) and, if
multiple wells are open, the Data Legends which may consist of well, interval and
element data. See “Color” on page 2-13 and “Ancillaries” on page 2-43.

File Management

Open a new Xplot document view from the “New Tab” on page 1-15 or the File menu.
If a well or wells are not open, after creating a new view, or opening an existing view, a blank Xplot
document view will be displayed.
The Xplot document views are managed via the File menu of the application window.

To... See...
Create a new Xplot “Creating New” on page 1-13
See also “Create Views from Selected Logs” on page 3-3
Open an existing Xplot “Opening” on page 1-14
Note: Several Xplots can be open concurrently within an
application window.
Duplicate the current Xplot “Duplicating” on page 1-14
Close a Xplot “Closing” on page 1-15
Save a Xplot “Saving” on page 1-15
Delete a Xplot “Deleting a file” on page 3-13

Adhoc commands are also available from the File menu of the application window.
