PREFACE

First of all , we’d like to say thanks to Almighty God for helping us and give us
chance to finish this assignment time. And we would like to say thank you to Mr. Mangara
M. Tambunan as the lecturer that always teaches us and give much knowledge about English
Engineering.

This assignment is the one of English task that composed of Components and
Assemblies. We realized that this assignment is not perfect, but we hope it can be useful for
the readers.

Hopefully we as the student in Industrial Engineering can work more professional in

the field of English Engineering. Thank you

CHAPTER 1

Describing Component Shapes and Features

Decanter

Decanter or carafe is a glass or

multi-layer insulated stainless steel
carafes are common in drip filter
coffee makers. Insulated carafes are
typically more efficient, since less
energy is required to keep brewed
coffee warm.

Electric Pump

An electric pump or piston is allows the brewing process to

pump cold water from the water reservoir and injects it into
the boiler under pressure greater than 100 psi. The pressure
of the incoming water forces the hot water already in the
boiler into the group or brew head.

Grinder

An electric motor powers a grinder to prepare whole

coffee beans for brewing.

1
Heating Element

An electric resistance heating element in the water

reservoir is used to heat up water for brewing in drip
coffee makers.

Microprocessor

A microprocessor is used to control various user-

selectable product functions, including carafe pre-
warming and automatic brewing start/stop timers.

Steam Wand

Vessel in which a steam-air mixture is discharged to

froth milk. Contains a conduit having an air admitting
inlet and an air discharging outlet.

Warming Plate

An electric resistance heater is used to maintain

brewed coffee at a temperature between 160o and
190oF.

CHAPTER 2

Explaining and Assessing Manufacturing Techniques

The parts for the automatic drip coffee maker are typically made by specialized shops.
The digital clocks, timers, and switches are all purchased from companies that produce those
items. The plastic parts are made at a plastics company, and the metal parts at a metal
stamping plant. The manufacture of the actual coffee maker consists of putting all these parts
together.

1. Injection molding

The plastic parts for automatic drip coffee makers are designed by the manufacturer and then
outsourced to specialty plastics companies. The plastics company uses the manufacturer's
design to make a mold. Then parts are produced by injection molding; heated plastic is forced
into the mold under pressure, cooled, and released. These parts are then shipped to the
manufacturer for assembly.

2. Stamping

The metal base plate is made at a specialized metal stamping plant. A sheet of metal is rolled
out, and heavy machines punch out the specified shape. Then these are shipped to the
manufacturer.

3. Assembly

The parts of the coffee maker are put together on an assembly line. The electrical components
are assembled first. These are designed so they can be simply snapped together. Workers
standing at the assembly line each snap in a part as it comes to them, and the whole line may
have 40 to 80 workers, each doing a specialized job. The timer device is snapped in, then the
cord. The metal warmer plate is snapped on, and then the thermostat is wired. The heater for
the warmer plate is assembled, then placed on a a small pallet about the size of an index card.
The pallets are placed on a conveyer belt that carries them through a sonic welding machine.
This automatically welds the wiring for the heater. Once the internal wiring is complete, the

3
rest of the pieces—the housing and the filter reservoir—are snapped together. Some pieces
may be screwed in by workers using pneumatic screw drivers.

4. Packaging

After assembly, workers place the coffee makers in small cartons. Then workers place these
cartons in larger packing cartons which might contain several units. These may be taped shut
by hand, or they may be taped automatically by passing on a conveyor belt through a taping
machine. Typically, another machine automatically imprints a bar code on the packing box,
for tracking information. Then the boxes are stacked on large pallets and shipped or stored in
a warehouse.

CHAPTER 3

Explaining Jointing and Fixing Techniques

The Coffee Making Process

1. After pouring water into the reservoir, it flows through the hole and into the aluminum tube
in the heating element.

2. Once you've hit the switch, the heating element heats the aluminum tube, eventually
boiling the water

3. The water bubbles, caused by it boiling, rise up into the second tube. Being smaller, this
tube allows for some water to ride upwards on the boiling bubbles.

4. The boiling water flows up into the drip area, where it is spread out in order to drip evenly
on coffee grounds.

5. Hot water flows through the grounds, creating the wonderful coffee we all know and love,
and then finishes its journey in the coffee pot.

One of the biggest advantages of a simple drip coffee maker is that the machines are
designed to make a large amount of coffee at one time. Normally, these coffee machines can
make as many as 12 cups of coffee in a single cycle. Additionally, drip coffeemakers allow
for you to plan ahead. Since the coffee making system is closed, you can add water and set up
the machine the night before without worrying about the water or the coffee beans being
contaminated overnight. This way, you're a simple button push away from a great cup of
coffee in the morning.

With no real mechanical pump and almost no moving parts at all, drip coffee makers
are almost as simple as French press pots, and just as reliable. Some coffee machines have
more advanced features, including programmable timers and strength controllers. These
coffee machines still utilize the same basic process, however, ensuring they remain reliable
and virtually maintenance-free.

Potential Coffee Maker Problems

Despite how reliable coffee makers are today, there are still a few potential issues that
can arise over their lifetime. Some of the most common problems that occur in coffee
machines include:

1. Issues with the power cord or switch

Like most electrical appliances, sometimes the power cord just quits on you. The same can
happen with the switch, however it still is somewhat rare. If this happens, your best bet is to
either let a pro check it out or go shopping for a new coffee maker.

2. Clogged valves

A simple problem to fix, occasionally the valve that works in conjunction with tube
connecting the hot water to the drip area can become clogged. In this instance, excess debris
causing the clog can usually be removed by hand.

3. Clogged tubes

In the case of clogged tubes within your coffee maker, excess calcium is usually the culprit.
This can particularly be a problem with the tube on the heating element. As with other home
appliances, usually just a simple run of vinegar through the machine can clean it out and
dislodge any calcium buildups.

4. Heating element failure

Regardless of whether it's the switch in the heating element or the coil itself, this is a tough -
though rare. In this case, your only real option is to start shopping for a new coffee machine.
