What will happen if extrajudicial killing will perpetuate for a long time? Does it make our place
free and safe from crimes again? Or it will abandon our country with an uncountable number of
unsolved killings?
Mr. Rodrigo Duterte won the presidential election held in our country on May 9 year 2016.
During his election campaign he insisted that on his governance/regime he will end criminal
activities within three to six months and urged the law enforcement agencies and the public at
large to kill people suspected of dealing or trafficking drugs as well as people who use drugs.
More than 5,000 people had been killed between July 2016 until the end of year 2018. These
killing have reportedly taken place in several parts of the country (including Manila, Bulacan,
Cebu, Rizal, Abra, Bataan, Pangasinan and Cavite) and carried out by police and "unidentified
hitmen". Even though people are aware that extrajudicial killing is unlawful the incresing report
of unsolved killings is noticeable and that soaring numbers of killing of alleged criminal suspects
is proof of the "success" of our presidents anti-drug campaign and urged police to "seize the
momentum"(Duterte,2016) .The objective of extrajudicial killing is to diminished the peoples
illegal activities, but we cannot deny the fact that extrajudicial killing is illegal execution
unlawful, and this is not the right way to make things safe again.
However, some people are in favor with this killings. For the reason like they are worried that if
people will continuously using illegal drugs, the next generation of Filipinos faces serious
challenges in the future if the extreme measures are not undertaken (Capistrano, 2016). If
these criminals are not eliminated, they will continue to do such crime through drugs again
(Capistrano, 2016) and we all know that there's so many drug-related crime including drug
manufacturing, trafficking, dealing as well as using drugs. Some people commits violent
offences while under the influence of drugs. And the violence involving drug dealers who may
clash with rival gang or be violent towards drug user who owe them money (Shapiro, 2017). If it
is kind of process of unrooting crimes in the Philippines, Filipinos might get afraid or scared in
doing things related to drugs. In every 10 Filipinos, 7 are worried that they themselves or some
someone they know will become a victim of extrajudicial killing if they are associated to drugs
(Talabong, 2017)
While on the other hand extrajudicial killing is inequitable because people are treated wrongly
and they never given a chance to state their side to a legal procedures. Instead of ensuring the
protection and rights of people who use drugs, evidence-based drug treatment and harm
reduction services, Pres. Duterte has called them to be killed claiming that "Rehabilitation is no
longer viable".
Also there are some cases of mistaken identity whereas the authority incorrectly thought that
they saw the defendant/suspect where in fact the person they saw is someone else. Like in the
case of Kian Delos Santos, a 17 years old grade 11 student in caloocan city. He was killed in a
drug operation in caloocan. Particularly in the northeastern part of metropolitan Manila.
Authorities tells that the victim fought back and so they had to shoot him but atleast four
eyewitnesses said that the victim was given a gun and was told to run and the autopsy results
supported the witnesses theory. He was shot at the back three times, with no indications that
he fought back (Gonzales, 2017). And that tells that the society itself does worsen the problems
that the government made any move to eliminate crimes through injustice way.
Even if the intention is good; the end does not justify the means. Police officers and authorities
takes a persons life without due process of law. The government itlself becomes a lawbreaker.
Government mus think about the justice system in our country that killings is a crime if it is not
given any due process. This is not the right way to make things safe again, In fact, things might
get even more dangerous.
