The document discusses a character generator spreadsheet for the 7th Sea RPG that automates character creation and allows tracking of attributes, skills, advantages, etc.

It cannot handle destiny spreads, regional advantages, languages other than those in the core books, or Sidhe characters. It also has limitations as an Excel spreadsheet rather than a dedicated programming language.

The core rulebooks and first several books of each nation and secret society are listed as supported. Further content will be added over time.

NecroBob's 7th Sea Character Generator

This is, of course, a character generator for the 7th Sea RPG. The character creation rules are
copyrighted by AEG, and can be found in their books. This is just an automated version of those
rules. All elements thereof belong to Alderac Entertainment Group, and hopefully they won't sue a fan
who loves the game so much that he spent hours (and hours and hours) creating a faster way of
making characters.

Version Notes
Currently, this is what I refer to as version 1.0b of this workbook. The basic character generation
functions work, and all of the data from the books has been added in.

Additions/Changes
Version 1.0b adds the last information from the books, from Sidhe Book of Nightmares. I will be
adding the official material from the web site (Avalon accents, etc) later on.

What This Thing Can't Do (aka The Bad News):


This character generator sadly can't handle a few types of character creation. Part of this is inherent
in the form - there are some things that Excel just can't handle well (it's a small miracle that it can tally
identical Knacks from separate Skills). The rest of it is myself - I'm not a programming genius (hence
why this is an Excel spreadsheet rather than a real chargen program written in a real programming
language, or even Visual Basic).

Destiny Spreads
Regional/Family advantages/disadvantages from the Nation Books
Pidgin Languages
Sidhe characters
Add Experience (I'm working on this, but it will be a while)
While we're at it, this spreadsheet won't make you more attractive, enable you to lose
weight, or enlarge unmentionable parts of your anatomy.

What This Thing Can Do (The Good News):


This should be able to handle the creation of most basic characters, Heroes, Henchmen, and Villains
alike. Go to the Character Builder sheet, and get started. You start by selecting a point total - [50], 75,
100, 110, 125 or 150. Then select Traits (enter the number of ranks you want to add to each Trait in
the Add column), Sorcery, Swordsman Schools, Skills, and all that stuff. If anything like nationality or
an Advantage gives you something else for a reduced cost, it should be automatically factored in. If
you have an illegal combination of attributes (such as having Sorcery and Man of Will), the
spreadsheet will send up a red flag, but will otherwise let you do it. This allows you to create "illegal"
characters, in case you need to bend the rules. Most everything is in nice neat drop-down boxes to
make it easier for you.

When you select Language under Advantages, go to the column next to it to select the specific
language and Acquaintace or Literacy (if applicable).

Some advantages (like Dracheneisen or Sidhe Blood) have multiple parts. These are built using the
"Multipart Advantages" sheet. These are tallied into the main Character Builder, with the correct
Advantage selected there.

The "Chapter House Builder" sheet is used to create advantages such as Rose & Cross Houses,
Free Thinker Cells, Fencing Academies, and the like, to give Secret Society members a lair of their
own. Like multipart Advantages, this sheet is also tallied into the main Character Builder (provided the
Advantage is selected).

The "Reference" sheet contains page number references for all of the character's Advantages, Skills,
and whatnot, handy for quickly looking up anything you need to know.

Printing your character can be done from the Character Sheet. It takes all of the information from the
Character Builder and condenses it into a better-looking form that prints out on three pages. Hopefully
it doesn't hurt anyone's eyes too badly.
What's Next?
The first thing is to get my hands on a copy of the Sidhe Book of Nightmares, and add any remaining
information from it. After that, I'll probably spend quite a bit of time fixing any remaining bugs in the
system and attempting to add any additional features. Eventually, I might do a version 2.0, starting
over from scratch, using what I've learned in the process of endlessly revising this spreadsheet
(behind the scenes this one is a real mess).

While version 1.0b of the generator worked wonderfully


for creating basic characters, I felt it could go further.
This version includes support for many new features,
including experiance and equipment. Beyond that, it
gives you the ability to print the character onto the
sheets given in the back cover of the players guide.

This version includes the region/family changes from


the nations books, the Destiny Spread system, and
Sidhe characters. More on these features below. It
now supports experienced characters too, and I've also
added support for Pidgin Languages.

Changes
All of the functions of version 1.0b remain intact.
However, there have been massive changes to the
program, and it has unfortunately become somewhat
crowded.

Interface Changes

I've slightly changed the interface for advantages, after


getting frustrated at languages taking up all my
advantage slots. Languages and Advantages are now
two separate areas, although much of the code
supporting languages under advantages is still intact
(making it rather sloppy underneath).

Because of the many knacks for the merchant skill, it is


being handled specially. If the merchant skill is being
taken, it must now be placed in the last skill box. The
full amount of knacks will be there, along with a blank
for your own knack.

The propability calculator references the table in the


GM's guide, and has no effect on the character.

Destiny Spread

By now, a lot of stuff's been added at the interface level.


I've tried to include as many stats from possible from
Destiny spread. Because it has to interface with
Regional Advantages though, a lot of the features are
spread around. Destiny effects are displayed similarly
to the Region effects, but you might have to search
around for them a little.

Family / Regional Advantages

Ok, this gets a bit tricky. Start with the character type &
nationality. Then, the question of nobility. For Eisen or
'Avalon', it doesn't matter here, but for Castille,
Montaigne, & Vodacce, it does. If you're noble, it'll give
you a spot to pick your noble family (2 for Castille). The
box to the right lists the effects.
Ok, this gets a bit tricky. Start with the character type &

Montaigne, & Vodacce, it does. If you're noble, it'll give
you a spot to pick your noble family (2 for Castille). The

For some countries, there will be another box on the


right to select the specific advantage. The generator
will fill out the advantages that change stats, but not
those that affect play (drama dice use, raises,
geographic affects, etc.)

For arcanas and some skills (typically the second free


skill), it will not fill in the blank for you, but will limit the
options on that blank. You will have to select these
yourself. Skills affected by this will be in the second
skill box, except the merchant skill from Eisen, which is
in the last skill box.

'Avalon' refers to the Triple Kingdom, while Avalon


refers to the individual country. Avalon, Inismore, and
Highland Marched each have their own advantages.

Pidgin Languages
Pidgin A's go together, B's together, etc. Just group
them as you like.

Wealth
Any wealth coming from advantages is automatically
calculated. Note that many memberships do not give
an amount on their funding, so it will be zero. Variable
sources of income, such as Merchant funds and
inheritance, are not added.

Equipment

Equipment is found on the character builder page,


below the red line under skills. Any items given by
advantages will automatically show up here. Some
advantages modify a range of weapons (IE:
MacEachern Weapon). These will put a marker next to
the weapon they modify. Note that Dracheneisen and
Puzzle Swords will instead be found under multi-part
advantages.

The free starting weapon is the first slot. Weapon


customization is in-line with the item, and will
automatically update the weapon on the printout.

For blooded objects, put 'yes' in the 'blooded' column


and it will be added to the item name.

Printing
There are two ways to print the character. The first is in
excel format, found on the 'Character Sheet' tab. Hide
any rows not needed, and print.

On this page you will also see a golden area marked


'Column Export'. This consolodates the most important
character stats into a small, standardized area. It is
mainly for use in comparing one character to another.
By default, it is not printed on the sheet, nor is the
'Notes' column. Deleating rows of the character sheet
(as opposed to hidding them) will cause errors on this.

For printing the character on the book's character


sheets, you'll first need to print at least 'front' and 'end.'
If you have more skills, it will expand to 'middle' and
eventually expand to 'repeat.' Skills with many knacks
will also cause the skills to expand to more sheets, as
will magic or schools. These are not supported in Excel
2000 or older.

Experience
This major program change allows you to track and
spend experience points on the character. To activate
it, select "no" on the "Starting Character" option at the
top. New options will appear throughout allowing you to
select whether an option is bought with HP or XP.

Ships
Building a ship is somewhat like building another
character, and has it's own screen. If multible
characters share the ship, build the ship for each
character and note how much of it they are paying.

Swordsman Schools
I've added a swordsman school generator on the last
page. Fill it out, and it will add in the school to the main
list on the builder page. Sorry, but only the most normal
types of schools are supported.

Schools with special selections will have drop boxes


appear near them.

Sidhe Characters
Selecting Sidhe under Character Type applies the
appropriate limits on the character, and creates a new
Sidhe menu to the right of the advantages. These
selections will appear at the end of the character sheet.

Some sorceries can combine to have unique effects.
This are listed under the second sorcery. In the case of
Carlos Sorcerers with 3 or 4 magics, the extra sorceries
are listed between the swordsman schools, and the
unique knacks near the skills. A new tally keeps track
of the sorcery points, so divide them as you like. Note
you will also need to fill out the Carl Native multipart

String
String is a way to archive a character in a very small file
size. It requires the use of this program to create the
character, and the string viewer program to view the
character. It also requires the use of a basic text editing
program, such as notepad.

Note that you will note be able to edit a character in the


string viewer, it is only useful for viewing the archive
copy.

Go to the String tab, hit ctrl-A to select all, then copy the
sheet and paste it into notepad. Save this notepad file
as your archive. To view the archive, open the String
Viewer file and the notepad file. Select all in notepad,
go to the string tab in the viewer, select square A1, and
paste. Then go to character sheet or the book sheets
to view the character.

This process allows the character to take a mere 7 k


instead of the 7 megs of the generator. While this may
not seem a great difference, it adds up when you make
many characters.

Editing
Though many pages in this program are hidden or
protected, this is merely to prevent accidentally
breaking the program. There is no password on the
protection, so feel free to edit if you like.

First, enter the name of the custom school, and the nation of origin (or none)
Select the two skill sets. (Knacks marked with * are advanced)
Select 3 swordsman knacks, or knacks from the two skills (included in selection).
Select if swordsman guild is added. If not, a free knack will be given instead.
List any note to go with school (IE: secret society only)
To finish, type in the special abilities for apprentice, journeyman, and master levels.
The school will be added to list on the main page.
