Techlog - Text Loading and Displaying - 6590914 - 02

This document describes how to load and display text in two ways in Techlog: 1) As point data by loading a CSV file containing text strings and depths and displaying the text at the specified depths. 2) As annotations by loading a CSV file containing text, depth intervals, and an ID column and displaying the text within the specified depth intervals. The file must be formatted properly and variables added before it can be loaded and formatted as annotations in Techlog.

Techlog: Text loading and displaying

 This document describes a couple of examples about text loading and

displaying in Techlog.
 The first example refers to text loaded as ‘point data’ (picture on the
left), the second example refers to text loaded as ‘annotations’ (picture
on the right).

 This best practice assumes basic

knowledge of the Techlog data
loading and displaying procedures.
1st example: load and display text as ‘point data’
Data loading

 This is the file to be loaded, as it appears in Excel. The file contains

short text strings to be displayed in Techlog exactly at the specified
depth.

 In order to load the file in Techlog, it is first saved from Excel in ‘csv’
format.
 Drag and drop the csv file on the main Techlog window. The ‘Data
import wizard’ window opens, you can load the file looking at the
settings from the example below.
 Below is how the data look like, after the loading phase, in the
Project browser (left) and in the Data Editor (right).
 From the Project browser, select the ‘Text’ variable, press ‘F4’ and
set ‘Variable type’ as ‘Text’.
Data displaying

 Open a Logview display

 Drag and drop the ‘Text’ variable from the Project Browser to the
Logview canvas.

 Select the track, right mouse click (MB3) and remove the track
grids.
 Select the ‘Text’ variable from
Logview:
 Press ‘F4’ button to
change the variable
properties under ‘Display
options’ tab.

 Go to the menu ‘Home’ to

customize the variable
font and size.
 This is how the result looks
like at this stage.
 In order to display a tick in Logview
in correspondence to the depth at
which the text refers to:
 drag and drop the ‘DEPTH’
variable from the Project
browser to the ‘Text’ variable
track.
 Select the ‘DEPTH’ variable.
 Press ‘F4’ button to change the
variable properties as in the
examples on the right.
 This is the final result for text
loaded as ‘point data’.
2nd example: load and display text as ‘annotation’
Data loading

 This is the file to be loaded, as it appears in Excel. The file contains

long text strings to be displayed in Techlog in certain depth intervals.
In this example the text string is taken from the content of this best
practice.

 For ‘annotation’ data loading, it is necessary to have an ‘ID’ column;

it is used by Techlog as ‘annotation’ dataset reference.
 In order to load the file in Techlog, it is first saved from Excel in ‘csv’
format.
 Drag and drop the csv file on the main Techlog window. The ‘Data
import wizard’ window opens, you can load the file looking at the
settings in the example below.
 Below is the difference between the ‘annotation’ dataset created
from inside Techlog (upper picture) and the dataset just loaded from
an external file (lower picture).
 The main difference resides in the ‘html’ variable missing in the
dataset loaded from external file. the “html” variable stores the font
and the color of the annotation.
 Apply these changes to the dataset loaded from an external file:
 variables ‘Tops’ and ‘Bottoms’:
o make sure these variables exist with these names;
o make sure these variables have the same family
(Reference – Measured Depth for this example) and unit;
 ‘html’ variable has to exist in the dataset: you can duplicate the
“plainText” variable and rename it as “html”;
 you can manually customize the ‘html variable in Logview (see
next slide).
Data displaying

 Open a Logview display

 Drag and drop the ‘Annotation’
dataset from the Project Browser
to the Logview canvas.
 You can customize the font in
Logview:
 select the annotation in the
Logview track (1)
 select the font from the ‘Home’
menu (2)
 With MB3 you can:

 Adjust the size of the

annotation to its box – MB3
(select the text box)

 Save the group of annotations

(select the variable header)

 Once saved, this is how the

‘Annotation’ dataset will appear
in the Project browser.
