Research skills

Technical
During the course of my research I have built up a wealth of techniques including:

• Molecular/Cellular Biology: Familiar with a wide range of techniques including

PCR, microarrays, bioinformatics, ELISA.
• Biochemistry: Protein chemistry, isolation and purification techniques, formulation
of novel methodologies.
• Environmental surveying and sampling techniques: Autosal and portasal
salinometers, oxygen titrator, niskin, reversal thermometers, corer and box corer
uses, anthropogenic transient tracers analyses (GC).
• Highly computer literate, able to analyse large datasets, modelling, extensive
genomic and metabolomic analyses. Proficient in Windows, Linux, Microsoft Office,
MatLab, LaTex, Python, salinometer data logger, Ocean data viewer, TIAMO 2.0.

Supervision and teaching

• Supervised the research projects of two undergraduate students during my third
year, including organising and planning their work, managing them on a day-to-day
basis and explained scientific facts to them.
• Postgraduate demonstrator, regularly supervising practicals for undergraduate
students throughout the Plant Science Department.
• Planning and leading a number of seminars for undergraduate students throughout
the Faculty of Science and throughout the academic year.
• Taught a small group of 6 second year students for 3 sessions during my third year
as part of a Plant Molecular Biology module, including preparing problem-based
lectures to assist them with their understanding of the lectures and practicals.
• A mentor to 3 Masters students throughout my PhD to date, providing academic
and pastoral support.

Communication
• Excellent written ability, developed through writing my thesis and co-writing
papers and posters for presentations.
• Good oral presentation skills, having presented my work as a poster four times at
scientific conferences around the UK as well as delivering a talk in France (please
see appendix for more details). I have also made several presentations within my
department.
• Organised, efficient and accurate lab-based work.
• Assisted the department with open days at the University, including disseminating
basic science information to prospective students and parents, giving tours and
representing the Faculty at the exhibition.
• Assisted Widening Participation with school visits, showing children from the local
area around the department and answering questions
• Involved in National Science Week to promoting science and the University to
members of the public in the local community.
Work experience

Technical experience: Laboratory Assistant, Jones’ Brewery (8 weeks, 2015)

• Worked in busy laboratory, learning new laboratory techniques for quality control
• Followed procedures accurately, and kept detailed records on database
• Developed good time management and organisational skills.

Voluntary work: Act for Wildlife (Jan 2015 – June 2015)

Worked on two projects:
1. Conservation work in Mauritius
2. Teaching English to children (aged 8 – 12). This required excellent organisational
skills as well as being creative and flexible.

Casual work: retail and bar work (Summer 2011, 2012 and alongside study)
Mixture of retail and bar work to subsidise my study costs.

Appendix

Detailed synopsis of PhD

You may wish to append an abstract of your PhD, briefly summarising your research in an
accessible way. It usually covers four key areas:

• The focus of your research (the problem or issue being addressed)

• The method(s) used
• The results or findings
• The main conclusions or recommendations

Conferences, presentations and courses attended

Include name of conference, title of paper/presentation, location and date

Publications

Can separate into “published”, followed by “forthcoming” (with year), “under review”
and/or “submitted”.
Some of the possible sub-headings you might include in this section:
Professional journal papers
Review articles
Book reviews
Authored books
Edited books
Guest editorships: journals
Academic journal papers
Book chapters
Publications in conference proceedings
Popular journal papers
Other publications (e.g. short encyclopaedia entries; contributions to dictionaries; book
reviews, etc)

When listing publications it's usual to follow the Harvard referencing system although you
can be flexible on this.
