1. Discuss the importance of assessment in teaching and learning. Why the need to vary our way
of assessing learning?

Assessment in learning provides information about the learner’s progress and

performance whether or not they have met the curriculum goals or objectives of individualized
programs or to make decisions about student’s future programs or placements.
This also helped the teachers, parents, as well as the students to determine the level or degree of
progress that he/she had learned in the lesson throughout the semester. By assessing the
students, teachers may determine what should be improved and what strategies to be used that
would help the students acquire the higher level of learning. Teachers need to vary their way of
assessing learning, since learner’s have multiple intelligences, and different learning styles that
should be respond with assessment that all of them can relate and comprehend. It’s not good to
focus in only one way or strategies of learning because there might be a possibility that the rest
of the learners cannot met the purpose or reasons of assessment that they must acquire.

2. What is meant by performance assessment? Give examples.

Performance Assessment are said to be more authentic than mere paper-and-pencil test, it
is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a
ready-made list. This assessment measures how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and
abilities to authentic problems. The key feature is that it requires the student to produce
something, such as a report, experiment, or performance, which is scored against specific
criteria. Some examples of performance assessment are: Performance tasks and Exhibition and
Demonstration. Performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students
to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency examples are:
(technology use, research, problem-solving, and writing). Exhibition and Demonstration is used
when students need an opportunity to demonstrate talents and abilities in a variety of ways
examples are (Physical Education performance, dancing, singing).

3. Cite one strength of portfolio assessment.

One strength of portfolio is, it is done by teacher and student: student aware of criteria. Portfolios
provide teachers with a tool for showing what, how, and how well students learn both intended
and incidental outcomes. They provide students and teachers with creative, systematic, and
visionary ways to learn, assess, and report skills, processes, and knowledge. Serves as a concrete
vehicle for communication, providing on-going communication or exchanges of information
among those involved in assessment.

4. What is the best way to evaluate progress in developing values and attitudes

The best way to evaluate progress in developing values and attitudes is through the use of
self-assessment. Self-assessment provides students with an opportunity to self-evaluate, or make
judgments about their learning process and products of learning as well as how was the progress
of their values and attitudes, based on criteria that they have agreed on with their teacher. Most
students are already informally evaluating their own work and giving themselves feedback, in
that case the more they’ll understand the purpose, process, and value of thinking about their
learning the more the teacher herself can observe or evaluate the attitude of the learners just by
observing and evaluating student’s response on the given assessment.

Let’s Reflect:

1.Emphasize on Self-Assessment

Self-Assessment promotes the development of metacognitive ability, ability to reflect

critically on one’s own reasoning: may involve an introspective observation, a product
assessment or a test: may include attitude surveys, interest inventories and personal journals.

Self-Assessment is the best way to measure the level of learning of the students from the
topics given to them guided with the curriculum. Here, teachers can effectively determine what
should be her strategies to be applied so that she can met the needs of improvements for her
students. Self-assessment also help students judge their own abilities and performance, and
become self-regulated learners. Through reflection journals, learners can freely use their critical
thinking on sharing their knowledge about the certain topic. It will help them recall the topic
base on their own understanding, and teachers can easily determine what methods that will suit
the learner for effective learning to happen. Moreover, self-assessment can address specific skills
in students, it helps teachers to evaluate on the potential of all students towards learning.

Teachers play a critical role in both designing rich activities for self-assessment and also
teaching students how to recognize valuable opportunities for self-assessment and to take
advantage of them.  Less effective teachers may provide self-assessment opportunities, but they
are either not effectively designed, or students may not recognize the importance of these
opportunities or know how to take advantage of them. As a future teacher, it is our responsibility
to design an assessment that would effectively provide student’s realization and let them know
the exact purpose of giving them the assessments. Self assessment can make the teaching-
learning process easy but this also requires teacher’s preparedness towards guiding the student’s
progress and through using self assessment. After all, student’s progress always lies in our hands.
