WORKSHOP THEORY AND PROCESSES

MODULE 1B:
One Piece Pattern (Flatback)

SHOP EXERCISE: ONE PIECE PATTERN (FLATBACK)
OBJECTIVES:
1. To be able to manufacture a flatback
2. To be able to understand the concepts of wood processing and providing allowances in
measurements
3. To be familiarize with basic hand tools.
MATERIALS:
1-piece solid wood L 125 x W 60 x H 15 in mm
TOOLS TO BE USED:
➢ Rip Cut Saw
➢ Rasp File
➢ Flat file
➢ Mallet
➢ Chisel
➢ Long-nose plier
➢ Steel brush
➢ Bench vise
➢ Electric Drill
➢ Drill bit 3/8”
➢ Lab apron
➢ Safety goggles
➢ Safety mask (N95)
➢ Try square

Module 1B: One Piece Pattern (Flatback)

PROCEDURE: (copy this procedure and convert it into flowchart format)

1. Inspect and check the material if the wood has squareness/ perpendicularity from all
direction using try square and measure the wood piece /material the initial dimension
should be 125 x 60 x 15 mm
2. If the initial dimension in step # 1 doesn’t follow our current material if it is excess from
125 mm cut the excess part using Rip Saw if the material is too small for 125 mm change
the material since our design would not fit to our material
3. Select a suitable reference by checking the perpendicularity of the wood using try square
4. At the top face of the wood let’s divide the wood in terms of left and right part (don’t cut
the wood marked only the center) to get the center of the wood make two diagonal lines
the intersection would be the center of the wood
5. At the upper left side of the wood measure 40 mm going downward
6. From step # 6 using try square measure 45 deg angle
7. At the upper right side of the wood measure 20 mm going downward
8. From step # 7 using try square measure 45 deg angle (outline of the flatback is created)
9. To construct the inner side of the flatback using try square measure 15 mm from the
outside outline of the flatback
10. From the inside outline measure 7.5 mm to get the center line of the upper base of the
tapering
11. From step # 10 at the center line of the upper base of the tapering measure 3 mm both
sides
12. Using try square transpose the lines at the other side of the wood for easy and straight
cutting using rip cut saw
13. Using Rip cut saw remove the part outside the outer outline (Note: always leave
allowances during cutting)
14. Using Electric Drill and Drill bit 3/8” create a hole it depends on number of hole for easy
removal of the inside part of the flatback (goal is to remove the inner part of the flatback)
15. Using different technique such as mallet and chisel remove the inner outline of the
flatback

Module 1B: One Piece Pattern (Flatback)

16. Using different set of files such as rasp file and flat file create the tapering for all sides
(note: at the side view of the flatback it shows a series of trapezoid which is the tapering
the upper base should be 6 mm and the lower base should be 15 mm)
17. Using sandpaper clean the wood dust of the flatback
