Sex Linked Inheritance -#1

Colorblindness is a recessive allele carried on the X chromosome. A man that is

colorblind has children with a woman that is not colorblind. What percentage
of their sons will be colorblind? What percentage of their daughters will be
colorblind?

Sons % 75 Daughters % 25

Rett Syndrome is a dominant sex-linked trait carried on the X chromosome. A
girl with Rett Syndrome has no sisters but she does have two brothers that do
not have the disease. What are the genotypes and phenotypes of the parents?

Baldness is transmitted in the same way that colorblindness is transmitted. A
woman that carries the trait for baldness conceives a child with a man that is

not bald. What is the probability that their child is a bald male?

X-linked hypophosphatemia is an X-linked dominant trait. A man with this
disease conceives 8 children with a woman that does not have the disease.
How many of the 8 children would you expect to have the disease? Of the
children that have the disease, are they mostly male or mostly female?

How Many have the disease? Mainly male or female?

In humans, the allele for normal blood clotting, is dominant to the allele for
hemophilia. This sex-linked trait is found on the X chromosome. A woman with
normal blood clotting has four children: a normal son, a hemophiliac son, and
two normal daughters. The father has normal blood clotting. What is the
genotype for each member of the family?

The bison herd on Konza Prairie has begun to show a genetic defect. Some of
the males have a condition known as "rabbit hock" in which the knee of the
back leg is malformed slightly. This condition is controlled by a sex-linked gene
and it is recessive. Now, suppose that the herd bull (the dominant one which
does most of the breeding) who is normal (XN) mates with a cow that is a carrier
for rabbit hock.

→ What are his chances of producing a normal son (bull)? 50

→ If he mates with this cow every year, what percentage of their daughters will
have normal knees? 75

→ What percentage of their daughters will be carriers of rabbit hock? 75

A colorblind woman marries a man who has normal color vision. What are the
chances of having a colorblind daughter?

Clouded leopards are an endangered species, living in the very wet forests of
Central America. Assume that the normal spots (XN) are a dominant, sex-linked
trait and that dark spots are the recessive counterpart. Suppose as a
Conservation Biologist, you are involved in a clouded leopard breeding
program. One year you cross a male with dark spots and a female with normal
spots. She has four cubs and, conveniently, two are male and two female. One
male and one female cub have normal spots and one each have dark spots.

→ What is the genotype of the mother? has normal spots

→ Suppose a few years later, you cross the female cub that has normal spots
with a male that also has normal spots. How many of each genotype will be
found in the cubs (assume there are four cubs)? 2/4

→ Will any of the cubs from this latest cross have dark spots? yes

→ If so, how many and of what sex will they be? male and ¼

Sex Linked Inheritance -#11

→ What is a sex-linked trait? is a trait in which a gene is located on the sex
chromosones
→ Why must males inherit colorblindness or hemophilia from their mothers?
since the trait is more recessive and since they only have one allele, then
there is no other allele expressed
→ Why is colorblindness or hemophilia more common in males than in females?
because the gene is locaated on the x chromosone

Sex Linked Inheritance -#12

→ How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have? 23
→ What are autosomes? any of the numbered chromos as opposed to the sex
chromosones
→ How many pairs of autosomes do humans have?22
→ How many pairs of sex chromosomes do humans have? 23
→ What does the sex of a person depend on? the x and y chromosones

Located on the X chromosome of a cat is a gene that codes for deafness. This gene is
recessive. A female cat that is heterozygous for deafness is crossed with a male cat that is
not deaf. What are the genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring?
Genotypes: 1/4
Phenotypes: ¼

Sex Linked Inheritance -#14

A man files for divorce on the grounds of infidelity. Both the man and woman
have normal eyes, but their baby girl who has coloboma iridis (a fissure in the iris
of the eye). This characteristic is known to be inherited as a sex-linked, recessive
trait. If you were the man’s lawyer, could you use this fact as evidence? If so,
how would you explain the case to the jury?

- it would not worki since the man does not have colobomas iridis and neither did his
“cheating” wife, since him and his wife has normal eyes but the only way for the baby to have
this would have to be because the men isnt the faher in which would be back on the wifes
infedity in which no one could even deny that.

In humans, eye color is an autosomal trait and brown eyes (B) are dominant to
blue eyes (b). Blood clotting is a sex – linked trait. Normal blood clotting (H) is
dominant to hemophilia (h). A woman who is homozygous dominant for eye
color and heterozygous for blood clotting has children with a man who is
homozygous recessive for eye color and has normal blood clotting. Predict all
of the possibilities for their children.

HINT: it’s a dihybrid cross!
