Partner User Guide: NetBackup Analyzer

Introduction
The NetBackup Analyzer is an assessment tool that is quick and easy to use. The results will give you
a Snapshot into the customers NetBackup Environment.

Why you should care

The goal of this tool is to facilitate and accelerate the opportunity detection process while engaging
with the NetBackup customers and
start a meaningful conversation
about their environment by helping
them to understand where you can
help.

The NetBackup Analyzer is not a

compliance tool (use Nbdeploy) and
cannot be used to force or verify
compliancy. Proper tools and
procedures must be used for
verification if any licensing
compliancy breach is suspected.

If the NetBackup Analyzer results

indicate a detailed consulting
assessment may be required we
suggest using the Symantec Partner
Enablement NetBackup Assessment
Tools to do so.

The NetBackup Analyzer results will require NetBackup knowledge to translate the assessment data
into possible opportunities. Some guidelines are provided through the NetBackup Analyzer -
Interpretation Guide. However, this does not replace the experienced interpretation of a NetBackup
knowledgeable person.

The NetBackup Analyzer supports NetBackup versions 6.x and 7.x.

Obtaining the NetBackup server output

The NetBackup Analyzer can provide a report over a single NetBackup domain, or over multiple
NetBackup domains.

Gathering the data: Go to each master server within the customers’ environment and run following

Windows:

<NBUInstallDirectory>\NetBackup\bin\admincmd\bpimagelist -l -
hoursago 800 >MasterServerName-bpimagelist.txt

Unix or Linux:

/usr/openv/NetBackup/bin/admincmd/bpimagelist -l -hoursago 800

>MasterServerName-bpimagelist.txt

where the “MasterServerName” is the host name of this master.

Warning: Do not change the naming convention of this output file. The processing server needs this
format to process the content correctly.

The output covers 800 hours (or 30 days) worth of backups within the NBU environment. It is
unnecessary to try to cover more than 30 days. There would be little difference to the final results.

Tip: the output of an environment having many images can easily be 100MB, but is highly
compressible, sometimes up to 80%.

Preparing the output for processing

Single Domain:
For a single NetBackup domain: Zip the individual 'bpimagelist' file in a .zip file. This should not be a
tar, gz, Mac compressed file, or any other zip format.

Multi-Domain:
For a multi NetBackup domain: Gather all the ‘bpimagelist.txt’ files from the different master servers
and zip them all up in one single .zip file. This should not be a tar, gz, Mac compressed file, or any
other zip format.

Name the ZIP file using the following naming convention (enter this name carefully as any errors can cause
the report to not process correctly)
– format = symantecEmailAddress--NBU--Partnername_CustomerName.zip
• Example : paul_XXX@symantec.com--NBU--partnerX_ABCcompany.ZIP
** You must use the e-mail address of the Symantec Specialialist or SE that will be sending you the results.

Upload the ZIP file to: exftpp.symantec.com

– Username: symboxsupport
– Password: Symantec@123

After uploading the Zipped file:

Send an E-Mail to a Symantec Sales Engineer or NetBackup Sales Specialist with the information
listed below in the Registration section. The Specialist will then process the request and return the
results to the reseller. Typical turnaround on this process is 48 hours.

The results obtained from the NetBackup Assessment Tool will be in an Excel Workbook format
called NetBackup Analyser Dashboard, a leave behind Word Doc and a populated presentation. The
Partner Pre-Sales and Sales Manager should review the results together to verify the chances of an
opportunity with the customer.

The “Instructions” tab provides guidance with the graphs in the report: how to interpret them, what
discussion points they may help with to detect opportunities as you review them with the customer.

An additional Guide symBox NetBackup Analyzer - Report Interpretation Guide with directives
providing assistance with the review of the results and how to interpret them is available from your
NetBackup Sales Specialist.

It is strongly advised to thoroughly review the report and the PowerPoint deck before engaging with
the customer. Having such a deck provides an agenda for the meeting to ensure you do not derail in
too much technical discussion for this initial meeting which may need separate follow up
information workshops.
