CHKD Math 9 LAS 3 Inverse Variation

This document provides an example of an inverse variation problem. It defines inverse variation as a relation where one variable decreases as the other increases at a constant ratio, represented by the equation y=k/x, where k is the constant of proportionality. The document gives an example of finding the value of y when x=10, given y=10 when x=2. It provides the step-by-step work and solution. Finally, it provides two exercises asking to solve for the indicated variable using inverse variations.

Activity Title: Inverse Variation

Learning Target: To define and apply the concept of inverse variation.

An inverse variation is a relation described by the equation of the form:

𝑘
𝑦=
𝑥
where k is the constant of proportionality. Another way of writing this is,
𝑥𝑦 = 𝑘 .
An inverse variation tells us that the value of one variable decreases as the
other variable increases at a constant ratio.

Example: If 𝑦 varies inversely as 𝑥, and 𝑦 = 10 when 𝑥 = 2, find 𝑦 when

𝑥 = 10.
Solution:
Step 1: Write the equation of the variation: 𝑥𝑦 = 𝑘
Step 2: First find the value of k by substituting the given values of 𝑦
and 𝑥.
𝑘
10 = Solve for k by doing some algebra.
2
2(10) = 𝑘
20 = 𝑘 This is the constant of variation.
20
Step 3: 𝑦 = Substitute 20 for 𝑘 and 𝑥 = 10 in the equation of
𝑥
variation.
20
Step 4: 𝑦 =
10
𝒚=𝟐 This is the value of 𝑦 when 𝑥 = 10.

Exercises: Solve for the indicated variable in each of the following.

1) If 𝑦 varies inversely as 𝑥, and 𝑦 = 3 when 𝑥 = 4, find 𝑦 when 𝑥 = 6.

2) If 𝑚 varies inversely as 𝑛, and 𝑚 = 8 when 𝑛 = 3, find 𝑚 when 𝑛 = 12.
