Flow
Objective
Obtain the steady state solution for the 2D laminar duct flow given in Figure 1 with the spec-
ified initial conditions. Show the tutor that you have produced;

Experimental Setup
1. Press the start button (windows logo) and launch ANSYS 19.2 > Workbench
2. Drag and drop Fluid Flow (FLUENT) from the Analysis Systems window onto the
Project Schematics window
3. Right click on Geometry cell and select New DesignModeler Geometry
Pre-Processing
4. Under Tree Outline, RMB (Right Mouse Button) on the XY Plane, and select Look At
5. Select Sketching > Rectangle
6. Create rectangle on the graphics window, click to select 1st point, move cursor, click to
select 2nd point (Note: Don’t drag cursor with the button held down)
7. Select Dimension in the Sketching Toolbox window
8. In the graphics window LMB (Left Mouse Button) down on vertical side of the rectangle,
drag, add dimension in the details view
9. Repeat for horizontal side
10. Use Modify > Drag to move the rectangle, put the bottom left corner on the origin.
(RMB in the graphics window, zoom to fit)
11. Use Dimension > Move to move dimension labels (if necessary)
12. Select Modelling tab in the Tree Outline > sketch 1 (under the XY Plane)
13. Select the tab in the upper left of the screen Concept > Surfaces from Sketches
14. In the Details View select Apply then Generate
2
15. Now close the Design Modeller and return to the workbench program, you should see a
green tick next to the Geometry option within your project
16. Double click on Mesh
17. In the Outline Tree select Geometry
18. Choose Edge Select in the toolbar
19. In the geometry window select the inlet edge (vertical line on the left)
20. RMB Create Named Selection, type INLET
21. Repeat for outlet (right vertical line) and label OUTLET
22. Repeat for the top and bottom horizontal lines and label WALL (note: hold the ctrl
when selecting the edges to select multiple)
23. Click on Mesh in the Outline Tree
24. In the mesh window, use Face Select and choose the entire rectangle face
25. RMB Insert > Face Meshing
26. Select Mesh in the Outline Tree
27. Under Details of Mesh > Defaults, set Element Size to 0.01
28. Select Generate, You should now have a meshed rectangle (See Figure ??)
29. Select Update to make the mesh available for processing using Fluent
30. Close the meshing program and return to the workbench, you should see a green tick next
to the Mesh option within your project
Processing

34. Press OK
35. Under Solution Setup on the left hand side click Boundary Conditions > INLET >
Edit > set inlet velocity to 0.001ms−1
36. Under Solution > Solution Initialisation > Initialisation (choose Hybrid Ini-
tialisation)
37. Solution > Run Calculation > Number of Iterations enter: 100. Note that this
is a somewhat arbitrary number. We want the simulation to end when the residuals
have reached the convergence criteria, not the iteration limit. If the simulation reaches
the iteration limit before reaching convergence, increase the number of iterations and
continue.
38. Calculate
39. Once the solution is complete close the Fluent module and return to the workbench
Post-Processing
40. Double click the Results option in the project to launch CFD-Post
41. Select Location and choose Plane > Plane 1 > OK
42. Select Vectors icon > Location > Plane 1 > Apply
You should see a vector field which will look similar to what has been shown in the
lectures. Save this image either by the capture option within CFD-Post or by other
means.
43. Similarly choose the Streamlines icon > Location > INLET > Apply
You should see a set of lines with different colours (indicating a change in magnitude)
that extend from the inlet to the outlet. Save this image either by the capture option
within CFD-Post or by other means.
44. Select Location icon in the toolbar > Line > Line 1 > OK
45. Select the newly created line and input the coordinates of Pt1 and Pt2 (Suggestion: you
want to choose entire duct height halfway down the duct, i.e. x = 0.5m) > Apply
46. Create a chart by selecting the icon
47. Data Series > Location > Line 1
48. X-Axis > U Velocity
49. Y-Axis > Y
50. Apply
You should see a profile very similar to what has been shown in the lectures. Save this
image either by the capture option within CFD-Post or by other means.

In case you need to revisit this set-up (Hint: you will), save all the files by selecting save
project in the workbench program and save to a USB, etc as files are not stored on the
University computers after logout.
