2. A mixture containing equimolar amounts of benzene(1), toluene(2), and
ethylbenzene(3) is flashed to conditions T and P. Determine the equilibrium mole
fractions {𝑥𝑖} and {𝑦𝑖} of the liquid and vapor phases formed and the molar fraction 𝒱
of the vapor formed. Assume that Raoult’s law applies.
a. 𝑇 = 110℃ , 𝑃 = 90 𝑘𝑃𝑎
b. 𝑇 = 110℃ , 𝑃 = 100 𝑘𝑃𝑎
c. 𝑇 = 110℃ , 𝑃 = 110 𝑘𝑃𝑎

3. A concentrated binary solution containing mostly species 2 (but 𝑥2 ≠ 1) is in
equilibrium with a vapor phase containing both species 1 and 2. The pressure of this
two-phase system is 1 bar; the temperature is 25°C. Determine from the following
data good estimates of 𝑥1 and 𝑦1. State and justify all assumptions.
ℋ1 = 200 𝑏𝑎𝑟
𝑃2𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 0.10 𝑏𝑎𝑟

4. A liquid mixture of cyclohexanone(1)/phenol(2) for which 𝑥1 = 0.6 is in equilibrium
with its vapor at 144°C. Determine the equilibrium pressure P and vapor composition
𝑦1 from the following information:
• ln 𝛾1 = 𝐴𝑥22 and ln 𝛾2 = 𝐴𝑥12
• At 144℃, 𝑃1𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 75.20 and 𝑃2𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 31.66 kPa
• The system forms an azeotrope at 144℃ for which 𝑥1az=y1az=0.294

5. A binary system of species 1 and 2 consists of vapor and liquid phases in
equilibrium at temperature T, for which
ln 𝛾1 = 1.80𝑥22
ln 𝛾2 = 1.80𝑥12
𝑃1𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 1.24 𝑏𝑎𝑟
𝑃2𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 0.89 𝑏𝑎𝑟

6. For the acetone(1)/methanol(2) system, a vapor mixture for which 𝑧1 = 0.25 and 𝑧2
= 0.75 is cooled to temperature T in the two-phase region and flows into a separation
chamber at a pressure of 1 bar. If the composition of the liquid product is to be 𝑥1 =
0.175, what is the required value of T, and what is the value of 𝑦1? For liquid mixtures
of this system to a good approximation:
ln 𝛾1 = 0.64𝑥22 and ln 𝛾2 = 0.64𝑥12

7. The stream from a gas well is a mixture containing 50 mol% methane, 10 mol%
ethane, 20 mol% propane, and 20 mol% n-butane. This stream is fed into a partial
condenser maintained at a pressure of 250 psia, where its temperature is brought to
80°F. Determine the molar fraction of the gas that condenses and the composition of
the liquid and vapor phases leaving the condenser.

8. A mixture consisting of 1 mol% ethane, 5 mol% propane, 44 mol% n-butane, and
50 mol% isobutane is brought to a condition of 70°F at pressure P. If the molar
fraction of the system that is vapor is 0.2, what is pressure P, and what are the
compositions of the vapor and liquid phases? (Hint: Use DePriester chart and 𝐾𝑖
=𝑦𝑖/𝑥𝑖 correlation)

9. A binary mixture of benzene(1) and toluene(2) is flashed to 75 kPa and 90°C.
analysis of the effluent liquid and vapor streams from the separator yields: 𝑥1 =
0.1604 and 𝑦1 = 0.2919.
An operator remarks that the product streams are “off-spec,” and you are asked to
diagnose the problem.
a. Verify that the existing streams are not in binary equilibrium.
b. Verify that an air leak into the separator could be the cause.

10. A light hydrocarbon mixture containing 5 mol% propane, 85 mol% n-butane, and
10 mol% n-pentane is stored as a liquid under its vapor pressure in a refrigerated
tank. Available refrigeration keeps the contents of the tank at 40°F. Although the tank
contains ample vapor space, it is essentially full of liquid on a molar basis. What is
the storage pressure? (Hint: Assume 𝑇𝑏𝑢𝑏𝑙 = 40℉ and use DePriester chart)
