Assignment – 2

Due Date: 17.02.2021

1. The state of stress at a point is characterized by the components

σx=100MPa, σy= -40MPa, σz=80MPa and τxy= τyz= τzx=0
Determine the extremum values of the shear stress, their associated normal stress,
octahedral shear stress and its associated normal stress.
2. A cylindrical boiler, 180 cm in diameter is made of plates 1.8 cm thick and is subjected to
an internal pressure 1400 kPa. Determine the maximum shearing stress in the plate at point
P and the plane on which it acts.

3. The corss section of the wall of a dam is shown in Figure. The pressure of water on face
OB is also shown. With the axes Ox and Oy, the stress at any point (x,y) are given by
(γ=specific weight of water and ρ=specific weight of dam material)
𝜌 2𝛾 𝛾 𝛾
σx=-γy, σy= − 𝑥+ − 𝜌𝑦, σz=0 and τxy= τyx= − 𝑥
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝛽 𝑡𝑎𝑛3 𝛽 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝛽 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝛽
τzx= τyz =0

Check if these stress components satisfy the differential equations of equilibrium. Also
verify if the boundary conditions are satisfied on face OB.

4. The state of stress at a point P is characterized by the components

σx=12.31 MPa, σy= 8.96MPa, σz= 4.34 MPa and
τxy= 4.20 MPa, τyz= 5.27 MPa, τzx=0.84 MPa
Find the values of the principal shears and the associated normal stresses.

5. A solid shaft of diameter d=√10 cm is subjected to a tensile force P = 10,000 N and a

torque, T = 5000 Ncm. At a point A on the surface, determine the principal stresses, the
octahedral shearing stress and the max. shearing stress.

6. Consider the displacement field

u= [y2i+3yzj+(4+6x2)k]10-2

What are the rectangular strain components at the point (1,2,0)?

7. The displacement field of a body is given by

u= [(x2+y)i+(3+z)j+(x2+2y)k]10-6

Determine the principal strains at (3, 1, -2) and the direction of the minimum principal
strain.

8. Given the following system of strains for 2D case

εxx=5+x2+y2+x4+y4
εyy=6+3x2+3y2+x4+y4
γxy=10+4xy(x2+y2+2)

Determine whether the above strain field is possible. If it is possible, determine the
displacement components in terms of x and y, assuming that u=v at the origin.
