Ecological Pyramids: Short Notes on Ecological Pyramids !

Ecological pyramid is a unique concept for graphical representation of the number, biomass

and energy of the successive trophic levels of an ecosystem.

There is a gradual decrease in number, biomass and energy of organisms from the production

level to the consumer level.

1. Pyramids of Number:

It represents the number of individuals in various trophic levels of food chain per unit area at

any given time

2. Pyramid of Biomass:

The word biomass means the total weight of living matter per unit areas at a given time. In

every ecosystem, the biomass decreases from the producer’s level to the consumer level.

Grass → Mouse → Snake → Hawk

Plants → Rabbit → Fox → Lion

3. Pyramid of Energy:

In every ecosystem, the energy flows from the producer level to the consumer level. At each

trophic level substantial portion of energy is lost. Hence the amount of energy decreases from

the producer level to the consumer level.
