FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1

APPLIED ETHICS (GED0114)

INSTRUCTION:
After reading the material on “why should we be moral?”, assess the situations below and select
1 situation on how you would morally and ethically respond to the each of the following:

Situation 1:
You have a scheduled summative assessment (midterm exam) in your Major class
tomorrow and at the same time, you have a research paper in Ethics due on the same
day. You are supposed to study your lessons and finish your research paper when you
accidentally fell asleep. You wake up at 6:30 a.m. the next day, an hour before your Ethics
class and you realize you have not finished your research paper yet and you don’t have
enough time to do it. You know for a fact that your facilitator is very strict with deadlines.
What will you do?

Situation 2:
You have found an attaché case containing a huge sum of money (Php1,000,000).
As an honest person, you have decided to give it to an authority who will look for its owner.
Before going to the police station, you drop by your house to ask your mom to accompany
you. She tells you that she has visited the doctor to get the results of your younger sister’s
medical results. The doctor has informed her that your sibling needs immediate operation
and a huge amount of money is needed. What would you do with the money?

Situation 3:
You are the driver of a train that has unfortunately lost its break. On your way,
there are two opposite railways that separately lead you to two groups of people tied
together on the railway. If you turn right, you will crash a group of three elderly people;
otherwise, if you turn left, you will crash a group of five children. As the controller of the
train, which way would you choose? Justify your answer.

Then, after assessing and responding to your selected situation, you now have to briefly
answer:
What is the value of knowing the difference between what it’s like to be moral and what
it’s like to be ethical?
