LESSON PLAN

Subject: Mathematics 8 Date: February , 2020

Year Level/Section: Grade 8 - SSP

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Find the probability of simple events.
2. Solve problems involving probability of simple events.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Lesson/Topic: BASIC CONCEPTS OF PROBABILITY
Learning Sources: K-12 Mathematics Learner’s Module in Grade 8 (Pp. 568- 571)
Competency: The learner finds the probability of a simple event.
LC Code #: M8GE-IVh-1

III.PROCEDURE
A. PRESENTATION
1. Review
Review the class about the Probability and some word with special
meaning such as, Experiment , Outcome, and Sample Space.

2. Motivation
Divide the class into two, let them answer the activity for 5 minutes and
select 3 students to report their answers.
1. How many shirts are there? _____
2. How many pairs of short pants are there?_____
3. How many pairs of long pants are there?_____
4. If you will attend a party, how many choices are possible? _____

B. DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON

1. PRESENTATION
a. Pose this questions to the class:
 What are my chances of getting the correct answer in a True/False-type
question? Multiple choice-type question? or should I bring my umbrella
tomorrow?”

2. DISCUSSION
a. Guide the learners in finding the probability of simple events:

“The probability of an event, P (event), is a number from

0 to 1 which tells you how likely the event is to be
happened.”

number of favorable outcomes

P( E)
nmber of possible outcomes

PROBABILITY RULES
1. The probability of any event is a number (either a fraction, a decimal or
a percent) from 0 to 1.
Example: The weather forecast shows a 70% rain
P (rain) = 70%
2. If an event will never happen, then its probability is 0.
Example: When a single die is rolled, find the probability of getting an 8.
Since the sample space consists of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, it is
0
impossible to get an 8. Hence, P(9)= =0.
9

3. If an event is sure to happen, then the probability is 1.

Example: When a single die is rolled, what is the probability of getting a
number less than 7? Since all the outcomes {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} are less
6
than 7, P (number less than 7) = = 1.
6

4. The sum of the probabilities of all the outcomes in the sample space is 1.
Example: In rolling a fair die, each outcome in the sample space has a probability
1
of . Hence, the sum of the probabilities of the outcomes is 1.
6
1 1
If a fair coin is flipped, P ( T ) = and P ( H )= .
2 2
b. Provide these three problems involving finding the probability of simple events.

1. In a box, there are 4 green balls, 6 blue balls, and 8 red balls. Find the
probability of getting:
a. a blue ball
b. a ball that is not red

2. In a box, there are 20 balls numbered from 1 to 20. If a ball is drawn from the
box, find the probability of getting:
a. an even number
b. a prime number
c. a number divisible by 3

3. If a letter is to be selected from the word MILLENNIALS, find the probability

that the letter is:
a. a vowel
b. a consonant

C. APPLICATION
Have the learners tell how to find the probability of simple events.

number of favorable outcomes

P ( E )=
nmber of possible outcomes

Ask 3 learners to answer some problems of probability of simple events.

1. There are 20 marbles in a container: 4 are red, 5 are blue, and 11 are yellow.
What is the probability that a blue marble will be picked?
2. The local weather forecaster said there is a 20% chance of rain tomorrow.
What is the probability that it will not rain tomorrow?
3. Presently, there are 38 learners in Grade 8-Fleming. 22 of them are boys. If a
learner is to be chosen from the class, find the probability that the learner is a:
a. boy
b. girl
IV. EVALUATION
Have the learners answer the following questions on finding the probability of
simple events.

1. In rolling a fair die once, what is the probability of getting a number greater than 4?
2. There are 4 blue pens, 6 red pens, and 2 green pens in a bag. If a pen is drawn at
random from the bag, what is the probability that a green pen is drawn?
3. A letter is chosen at random from the word FEBRUARY. What is the probability of
getting a consonant?
4. In a box, there are 24 balls numbered 1 through 24. If a ball is drawn from the box,
what is the probability that the ball shows a number divisible by 5?
5. Of the 45 students in a class, 25 are boys. If a student is selected at random for a field
trip, what is the probability of selecting a girl?

V. ASSIGNMENT
Have the learners answer Activity 8 “Count and Answer…” on page 572 of their
Mathematics Learner’s Module.
