Unit 3 The Teaching and Learning of EFL

Module 5 Error

TASK

From the errors which you have identified in the students’ essays in the
lesson Self-check, choose one from each of the following categories: T,
PR and WO. 3 errors total.

Now you will prepare 3 remedial exercises (one for each of the 3 chosen
errors) which will focus on your students' specific language problems.

Make sure you have read the chapter Preparing Remedial Exercises at
the end of the module very carefully first. It outlines the steps of
preparing a remedial exercise.

Your answer must have five parts:

1. State clearly (a) the category of the error (T, PR, WO); (b) the error,
and (c) the correction.

For example:
T.
ERROR: I haven’t gone to school yesterday.
CORRECTION: I didn't go to school yesterday.

(This example is not from the Self-check, but your examples must
be from the Self-check)

2. Briefly state the rule which explains why there is an error. For
example: “If the time of a past action is stated or implied in the sentence,
use the past simple tense. If the time is not stated or implied, use the
present perfect tense.”

3. Write clear and simple instructions for the student who has made the
error explaining what they need to do in the remedial exercise. For
example: Fill in the gaps with the correct verb forms.

4. Give a worked example, ie. one question done correctly to reinforce

your instructions, and please check carefully that your example follows
exactly the rule you have given.
5. Prepare a 5-item exercise for your student. The exercise should follow
the model shown in the worked example and check your student's
understanding of the rule stated earlier.

Do this for each of the three chosen errors: T, PR and WO. Do not
prepare exercises for any other type of error.

Use only examples of errors from the five essays in the Self-check. Do
not use any other examples.

Please note that all items within the exercise should be of the same type
to avoid confusion, eg one exercise may contain 5 gapped sentences, 5
true/false questions, 5 words to put into the specified form, etc, but that
credit will be given for using a different type of exercise for each
category of error.
