CATERPILLAR® D8R UNDERCARRIAGE VS. SOREFA

UNDERCARRIAGE

Summary of Key Findings (Results may vary based on machine application)

• Greater surface hardness and hardened depth on the Caterpillar links will provide 25 to 35% longer
wear life.
• Greater surface hardness on the Caterpillar bushing O.D. can provide up to 10% longer wear life
depends of underfoot condition.
• Lower core hardness on the Sorefa bushing could result in structural strength concerns (bushing
cracking).
• Greater tread surface hardness and hardened depths on the Caterpillar roller will provide 15 to 30%
increased roller wear life.
• Poor heat-treat results of the Sorefa track roller bore surface and hardened depth can cause
bellmouthing causing sealability concerns and roller failure.

Track Bushing – 6Y3914

Critical Points

• Sorefa link rail surface hardness (A) was

less than the Caterpillar link.
• Sorefa link hardened depths (B) over the
pin, strut, and bushing were less than the
Caterpillar link.
• Surface finish on the Sorefa link pin and Critical Points
bushing bores did not meet the Caterpillar
specifications. • Sorefa bushing center outer diameter is
larger than the current Caterpillar bushing.
The Sorefa bushing is common with the
Test Results former Caterpillar large diameter bushing.
Caterpillar reduced the bushing outer
diameter and added wear material to the
Rail Surface Hardness segment tooth profile to provide balance
wear life between the bushing and segment.

Conclusion

Caterpillar undercarriage components are designed and manufactured to reduce the cost of operation.
Consistent, high quality components, matched to work and wear as a system, help deliver maximum
life and the lowest cost per hour. The Sorefa components tested did not meet many of the Caterpillar
specifications during the random sample audit process. In similar applications, the Caterpillar
undercarriage components would provide longer wear life and structural reliability. The result is
balanced wear, more uptime, and a lower cost per hour.

The information in this bulletin came from tests on randomly sampled current Sorefa parts. The test procedures and result
are on file and are certified to represent the parts actually tested. Caterpillar implies nothing further, and no one should infer
that these parts typify the maker’s overall production.
