History
Okada Manila Leisure and Entertainment was issued a casino license in the
Entertainment City in 2008. The casino complex, which was formerly known as Manila Bay
Resorts, was renamed Okada Manila in June 2016. Okada intends to use the facility to compete
with Macau casinos and to place Metro Manila as a regional and international destination. The
casino was supposed to open in November 2016, but it was postponed due to worse-than-
expected weather conditions. The Fountain was formally opened to invited guests on March 31,
2017. The casino opened the attraction to the general public the next day. The casino's
operations were greatly impacted by the Enhanced community quarantine in Luzon placed due
to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 1,000 of its 10,000 employees laid off in June 2020.
Organizational Structure
Byron Yip, the COO of Okada Manila, has been promoted to the role of president of the
casino hotel. Yip succeeds Takashi Oya, who also served as co-vice chairman of Tiger Resort,
Leisure and Entertainment, the Philippine-based corporation that runs the property as a
subsidiary of Japan's Universal Entertainment Corp. Yip's duties have included Okada Manila's
casino. Yip, who heads the overseas business division of Tokyo-listed Universal, has led Okada
Manila to phenomenal growth and has made it a leading integrated resort in terms of gross
gaming revenue in the Philippines. The resort is one of three destination-scale casinos currently
operating in Entertainment City, a special district of the Philippines capital. Tiger also declared
Manuel Lazaro's election as chairman and Takako Okada and Antonio Cojuangco's election as
co-vice chairs.
Specific Strategy
Okada Manila is introducing new policies in the resort complex, including best practices
and creative approaches focused on new government regulations. Strengthened protective
measures are also in place throughout the property, beginning with the practice of physical
distancing and the wearing of face masks in public spaces. With the addition of advanced
cleaning equipment such as disinfection chambers, ultraviolet scanners, and high-end cleaning
robots, Okada Manila has improved its sanitation and emergency protocols. Throughout the
community quarantine, the resort remained completely compliant with government
requirements, even going above and beyond the minimum health and safety measures by
implementing industry-leading procedures across its grounds. The company's 3T campaign
aligns with government policies and allows Okada Manila to modify its own approach to
prioritize the health and safety of its guests and employees. The resort pledges to continue
working with the government to provide a secure destination for potential visitors.
