F COLUMN DESIGN
It shall called a column if its effective length will be three
1 times the least lateral dimension.
If the effective length of column is not at least three time its
2 lateral dimension then it is known as Pedestal.
The nominal cover for a longitudinal reinforcement bar in a column should not
3
be less than 40mm or the diameter of the bars.
The diameter of lateral ties should be greater among, (1⁄4)th of the diameter
4 of the largest longitudinal bars. 6 mm
The Pitch or spacing of the lateral ties should not be
5 greater than the following. Least lateral dimension of the column. 16 times the
diameter of the mallest longitudinal bars. 300 mm
Minimum area of cross-section of longitudinal bars must be atleast 0.8% of
6 gross section area of the column.

Maximum area of cross-section of longitudinal bars must not exceed 6% of the

7 gross cross-section area of the column.
8 The bars should not be less than 12mm in diameter.
Minimum number of longitudinal bars must be four in rectangular column and
9 6 in circular column.
Spacing of longitudinal bars measures along the periphery of a column should
10 not exceed 300mm.

11 It maybe in the form of lateral ties or spirals.
