FOREWORD This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Structural Sections Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council. IS 808 : 1989 Dimensions for hot rolled steel beam, column, channel and angle sections ( third revision ) covers channel sections meant for structural application. Channel sections for use in Posts and Telegraphs Department and for general use as gate channels have been covered in this standard. This standard was first published in 1962. In this revision apart from general updating, the designaIn the preparation of this standard, the Sectional Committee kept tion of channels has been modified. in view manufacturing and trade practices followed in the country in this field. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the results of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding Off numerical values ( revised). The number of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

HOT ROLLED STEEL CHANNEL SECTIONS FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSESDIMENSIONS (First Revision )
1 SCOPE This standard lays down the nominal dimensions, mass-and sectional properties of hot-rolled steel engineering purchannel sections for general poses. 2 REFERENCES The Indian Standard 1852 : 1985 Specification for rolling and cutting tolerances for hot rolled steel products (fourth revision ) is a necessary adjunct to this standard. 3 TERMINOLOGY 3.0 For the purpose of this standard definitions shall apply. the following Y-Y axis r XX = a/ Z,, = zt = Modulus X-X axis zyy of section about the

5 DESIGNATION
3.1 Y-Y Axis - A line parallel to the axis of the web of the section and passing through the centre of gravity of the profile of the section. 3.2 X-X Axis - A line passing through the centre of gravity of the profile of the section, and at right angles to the Y-Y axis. 4 SYMBOLS Letter symbols used in this standard have been indicated in the figure in Table 1. The letter symbols used in the figure and table shall have the meaning indicated against each as given below: ~a= Sectional area in cma m = Nominal mass - in kg/m = ( 0785 a ) Lx = Moment of inertia about the X-X axis ZyI = Moment of inertia about the Y-Y axis
Hot rolled steel channel sections conforming to this standard shall be designated by the letters CHG followed by a figure denoting the depth of the channel in mm. 6 DIMENSIONS AND SECTIONAL PROPERTIES 6.1 The nominal dimensions and mass of channel sections shall be as given in Table 1. Sectional properties of the channel sections have also been given in Table 1 for information. 6.2 Tolerances The rolling and cutting tolerances of the channel sections shall be as stipulated in IS 1852 : 1985.

Review of Indian Standards
Amendments are issued to standards as the need arises on the basis of comments. Standards are also reviewed periodically; a standard along with amendments is reaffirmed when such review indicates that no changes are needed; if the review indicates that changes are needed, it is taken up for revision.
