Problem Statement
Road accident is a major problem in our country and the world at large (World Health
Organization, 2004). I will be conducting my research based on the study of road accident
around Ga-Rankuwa in Pretoria for a period of five years, starting from 2010 to 2015. This is
based on the registered accidents recorded monthly by the police in Ga-Rankuwa.
According to National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee, 2016) road accident
is defined as any accident involving at least one road vehicle occurring on a road. An accident
might result in people dying, damage to vehicles, property and the like injured people are
accident victims who had suffered from trauma requiring medical treatment with or without
hospitalization.
Road accident is defined as motor vehicle collision that occurs when a vehicle collides with
another vehicle, pedestrian, animal or any stationary obstruction such as a tree, pole or a
building. Road accident often results in injury, death and property damaged (Rune, 2006).
According to the British Medical Journal, (1956), causes of road accidents are as follows:
o Distracted driving when the driver diverts his/her attention from the road,
usually by eating food and reaching for a moving object inside a vehicle.
o Over speeding when the driver ignores the speed limit and drive.
o Drunk driving, when the driver is drinking him/she tend to lose the ability to
focus and function properly and it is very dangerous when operating a vehicle.
Driving under the influence of alcohol causes accidents daily.
o Driving under the influence of drugs can impair the ability to fully function as
a driver because when your mind is not clear and you do not have complete
control over your body, getting behind the wheels can lead to a serious car
accident.
o Design defects vehicles have hundreds of parts and any of those defective parts
can cause serious car accidents. Many vehicles have had problems with design
defects.

Another study was made regarding causes of road accidents that cell phones and texting also
contribute a lot to road accidents (National Traffic Safety, 2011). It approximated that 660 000
drivers are attempting to use their cell phones while behind their cars throughout the day.
Texting while driving is 6x more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving.
The study will help the government, particularly law enforcement agents and as well as the
community at large with the following:
o It will help the community to identify as well as educating them about road safety and
what to do to avoid being involved in road accidents.
o To identify the cause of road accidents and prevention.
o It will help the government and department of roads and transport in identifying ways
to reduce/minimize the causes of road accidents and also implementing of new rules
for drivers about road safety.
o It will help the police by identifying high accident zones around Ga-Rankuwa.
