Your Assignment

In each of the three tables provided, follow these steps:

1. Choose and write down a quotation from the list provided.

2. Write whether the opinion expressed was that of a hawk or a dove.
3. Think about and explain the main idea of the quotation. What opinion about the
Vietnam War was expressed in the quotation?
4. Finally, what is your opinion of this position? Write whether you agree or disagree
with the quotation and explain why.

Quotation #1:“Once upon a time our traditional goal in war — and can anyone
doubt that we are at war? — was victory. Once upon a time we were proud of
our strength, our military power. Now we seem ashamed of it. Once upon a time
the rest of the world looked to us for leadership. Now they look to us for a quick
handout and a fence-straddling international posture.”
— Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, 1962
Hawk or dove?Hawk

Main idea of the quotation:Barry Goldwater is criticizing the current state of the
army, and how it’s changed with time.

Your opinion/analysis:From what he’s saying, I believe he’s commenting on the

deterioration of the U.S. Army. I find this to be a little backwards, really. If
APEX VS holds any truth, then the United States had literally the greatest forces
of any country.

Quotation #2:“Should I become President . . . I will not risk American lives . . .

by permitting any other nation to drag us into the wrong war at the wrong place
at the wrong time through an unwise commitment that is unwise militarily,
unnecessary to our security and unsupported by our allies.”
— Future president John F. Kennedy, 1960

Hawk or dove?Dove

Main idea of the quotation:He states why we should not have put any more
money into the Vietnam War
Your opinion/analysis: a stalemate between vietnam and the United States caused
just this exact situation to occur. As powerful as America was, it was difficult to
wage a battle without any other significantly powerful allied forces. From the
start, it was a lost cause.

Quotation #3:“Numbers have dehumanized us. Over breakfast coffee we read of

40,000 American dead in Vietnam. Instead of vomiting, we reach for the toast.
Our morning rush through crowded streets is not to cry murder but to hit that
trough before somebody else gobbles our share.”
– Screenwriter/novelist and one of the Hollywood Ten, Dalton Trumbo, 1970

Hawk or dove?Dove

Main idea of the quotation:He’s pointing out Americas indifference to growing

conflicts, and provoking them to recognize the conflict and voice their opinion.

Your opinion/analysis: notice how closely this resembles Joseph Stalins quote,
“One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic. Was this really a dove
statement, or was he showing how people can dismiss tragedy and get away with
it?
