HELP!

FEEDBACK

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE – “Pay it forward!” If you can help with any of the requests
below, please take the time to do so. Your kind assistance will be appreciated and
rewarded.

. BEST GPS/CAMERA COMBO - Aurelie Shapiro of WWF Deutschland writes via the
APPLIED-GIS-RS list: “Can someone please recommend the best combination GPS
and camera? I want to be able to send a GPS/Camera with my colleagues who travel to

3
the field to take good pictures that can be geocoded, and also used for ground-truthing.
I.e. Here is a deforestation event that can be tied to an image. Some high end GPS
have poor cameras, are the cameras with GPS considered good enough for GIS
groundtruthing? Can someone suggest a good combination of both that would be easy
for the non-techny person to use? So I send it off with someone ready to go, and they
can turn it on (with minimal input - no need to mess with projections and data types),
take pictures, and then a GIS technician can capture all the data, map it, use it? Many
thanks, Aurelie.”
aurelie.shapiro@wwf.de

. SEEKING SOME EQUATIONS FOR BIOMASS ESTIMATION - Arun Dhakal writes

via the Nepalese Foresters group: “Dear all - I am looking for some alometric Equations
to estimate the biomass (leaf, stem, branch, bark and root) of the following species in
Nepalese context: 1. Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Masala); 2. Melia azedarach (Bakaino);
and, 3. Anthocephallus chinensis (Kadam). If any of us knows about it, please...Your
support is highly appreciated. Arun Dhakal.”
arun_dhakal2004@yahoo.com

. CAN REMOTE SENSING DETECT NUCLEAR RADIATION? - David Meek writes via
the Applied GIS and RS list: “Hi all, A non-academic question of interest given current
events: Is anyone aware whether remote sensing sensors are capable of detecting non-
thermal nuclear radiation (i.e. that from Japan's Fukushima Dain reactor)? If so, which
sensors have been utilized previously? Thanks, David.”
meekdav@GMAIL.COM

. WOULD FIRE PREVENTION WIRELESS DEVICES HAVE A MARKET IN CARBON

FORESTRY? Lorenzo Martelletti asked via the Carbon Forestry LinkedIn Group: “I am
in connection with an Italian company that provides innovative fire prevention wireless
devices that alert (web, sms) when the probability of a wildfire increases over a certain
threshold. I think the problem is really important since A/R carbon credits are not issued
if trees are burnt due to wildfires and are not in place at monitoring (usually each 4-5
years). This is a great risk for project developers (and also for upfront credit buyers). By
the other hand a human monitoring is very cheap in developing countries, although it
may not be efficient and it's effective only when the fire starts. Would there be a market
for such devices in carbon forestry? What the adequate monitoring cost per hectare
should be in your opinion?”

. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS, INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WILDLAND

FIRE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2011 - In an effort to continue to promote the
scholarly pursuits and graduate level training within the global wildland fire community,
in 2011 the IAWF will again be awarding two graduate-level scholarships to IAWF
members who are Master of Science (MSc) or Doctoral (PhD) students studying all
wildland fire or wildland fire related topics. Applications are encouraged from students
studying any aspect of wildland fire be it from the perspective of physical, ecological or
social science to less traditional subject areas as well: IWAF is looking through this
scholarship to recognize and support any type of research relevant to the global
wildland fire community. For more details, go to:
