Composers of the Classical Period.

So now, I will start discussing to you everything

about the classical period composers.

life and their famous works.

D. Discussion:
Teacher: Student:

The term classical denotes conformity with the

principles and characteristics of Ancient Greek and
Roman literature which were formal, elegant, simple,
freed and dignified.

We have 3 famous Classical Period Composer,

the first one is FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN 1732 – 1809

Does anyone who is FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN? He is one of the most prominent Austrian composers of
the Classical Period. His life is described as “rags to
riches” story. He came from a poor family and his music
led to his rise in social status. He was hired by a rich
patron and eventually became a musical director for
Esterhazy family for 30 years.

Very Good! That’s correct! I have here a sample piece of His music reflects his character and personality;
FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN, and I want you to listen and mainly clam, balanced, serious but with touches of
observe. humor.
(Playing Video)
Now what have you observed?

Yes! Very good!

He also composed 100 symphonies and

developed them into long forms for a large orchestra.
He was named as the “Father of Symphony”. Most of
his works are “Surprise Symphony”, “The Clock” and
“The Military.” He also wrote chamber piano music and
choral works.

Next composer is WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART

1756 – 1791

He is a child prodigy and the most

Who is WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART? amazing genius in musical history. At age of five,
he was playing the violin and harpsichord; at age
of six, he was recognized as an exceptional pianist
and at the age of seven he was already composing
excellent music. At the age of thirteen, he had written
sonatas, concertos, symphonies, religious works and
operas and operettas.

Impressive! This is a sample music piece of WOLFGANG Beethoven's musical personality is they have great energy
AMADEUS MOZART let’s listen and observe. (Playing and strength, dynamic, almost never sentimental, special
Video) What have you observed in the musical piece? sense of humor.
Lastly, let’s talk about LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
1770 – 1827

Who among you know or heard LUDWIG VAN He was born in Bonn, Germany to a family of musicians
BEETHOVEN? and studied music at an early age. He was the composer
Can you tell me something about him? who bridged the late Classical era and the early Romantic
era. He was a talented pianist and composer. His famous
compositions include 32 piano sonatas, 21 sets of
variations, 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 16 string
quartets and choral music.

Exactly! Very Good! One of the sample music that

Beethoven composed is the Fừr Elise that you’ve heard
earlier.

His music veered toward larger orchestra

What are the characteristics of Beethoven’s works? The sound was centered on the violas and lower registers
of the violins and cellos to give his music a darker mood.
All themes in a piece are tied together by one motif.
He also developed musical themes and motifs extensively
by means of modulation and used more brass instruments
and dynamics.

Great! I observed that all of you understand our lesson and

shows interest to our Classical composers.

Do you have any questions? We don’t have any questions maam!

Okay so if you don’t have any questions let’s now have

some activity that will show your understanding about our
lesson.
