Chapter 7 Unit Test Sequences and Series: 1. For Each Arithmetic Sequence, Determine The General Term

This unit test assessed students' knowledge and understanding of arithmetic and geometric sequences and series through multiple choice and short answer questions. Students were asked to determine general terms, calculate specific terms, find sums of sequences, and describe properties of arithmetic and geometric sequences. Questions covered skills like writing recursive formulas, identifying patterns of change, solving multi-step word problems, and communicating mathematical reasoning. The test evaluated students on key concepts around sequences and series through a variety of question types aimed at knowledge, application, communication, and higher-order thinking.

Knowledge & Understanding

1. For each arithmetic sequence, determine the general term

a) 35,40,45… [1] c) -29,-41,-53… [1]

b) 31.20,9… [1] d) 11,11,11… [1]

2. For each geometric sequence, determine the general term

a) 4,20,100… [1] c) 15, -60, 240… [1]

b) -11,-22,-44… [1] d) 896, 449, 224… [1]

Application

3. A simple fractal tree grows in stages. At each new stage, two new line segments branch
out from each segment at the top of the tree. The first five stages are shown. How many
lne segments need to drawn to create stage 20? [3].
4. During a skydiving lesson, Chandra jumps out of a plane and falls 4.9 m during the first
second. For each second afterward, she continues to fall 9.8 m more than the previous
second. After 15 s, she opens her parachute. How far did Chandra fall before she opened
her parachute? [2]

5. In a laboratory experiment, the count of a certain bacteria doubles every hour

a) At 1 p.m. there were 25 000 bacteria present. How many bacteria will be present at midnight?
Explain [3]

6. A student plants a seed, after the seed sprouts, the student monitors the growth of the
plant by measuring its height every week.
The height after each of the first three weeks was 7 mm, 20 mm, and 33 mm, respectively. If this
pattern of growth continues, in what week will the plant be more than 100 mm tall? [2]

Communication

7. Two terms if an arithmetic sequence are 20 and 50

a) Create three different arithmetic sequences given these terms. Each of the three sequences
should have a different first terms and different common difference [3]

b) How are the common differences related to the terms 20 and 50? [2]
8. In what ways are arithmetic and geometric sequences similar? Different? [2]

9. Describe how you can calculate the sum of the first n terms of a geometric sequence [2]

Thinking

10. Determine the recursive formula the following arithmetic sequence

a) T1 = 4 and consecutive terms decrease by 5 [2]

b) The first term is 21 and the second term is 26 [2]

11. The 5th term of a geometric sequence is 45 and the 8th terms is 360., Determine the 20th
term [3]

12. The 10th term of an arithmetic series is 34, and the sum of the first 20 terms is 710.
Determine the 25th term [3]
