Learning Goal
B1.1/1.2 - Analyse technological devices that apply projectile motion
and assess their impact on society.
B2.2 - Solve problems relating to motion involving projectile motion,
adding and subtracting vector quantities using vector diagrams,
vector components, and algebraic methods.

Success Criteria
Complete Projectile Motion Problems with a horizontal launch
vector.
Complete Projectile Motion Problems with an angled launch
vector.
Solve problems where the projectile lands on the same vertical
level.
Solve problems where the projectile lands on a different vertical
level.
Understand how to use components to solve for Impact Velocity.

1.5 - Projectile Motion

Introduction
A projectile is an object that flies through the air. during this flight, it
exhibits a combination of both horizontal and vertical motion. In its simplest
form, a projectile is an object thrown straight up in the air.

Notice that the vertical velocities change over time. This is

caused by the acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s2 [down]).
Initially the vertical velocity is large, reduces to zero as it
moves up to its max height, then increases on its way back
down. To solve for unknowns in a situation like this, one
would only need to consider the vertical components of the
object's motion.

The situation becomes more complex when we introduce horizontal motion:

Notice the vertical velocities
behave in the same manner as
an object launched straight up.
Now however, one must
consider that the object is
exhibiting both vertical and
horizontal motion
simultaneously.

By taking the components vectors, projecle moon can be solved as two one-
dimensional problems.

Keys to solving projecle moon quesons:

1. Find the vercal and horizontal components of all velocity vectors.

2. Solve the queson as two independent 1D problems where me is the

common element.
MOVIE
3. The acceleraon in the vercal direcon is g = 9.81 m/s2
4. The acceleraon in the horizontal direcon is zero.

Ex. A cannon ball is shot horizontally with an inial speed of 100 m/s from a
60 m high cliff. The cannon ball lands in the water below.
a) How long is it in the air?

b) How far from the base of the cliff will the ball go?

c) Find the impact velocity of the cannon ball.

1.5 - Projectile Motion

Things to remember:

Horizontal
Velocity is constant (acceleraon is zero)
Range is how far the object goes (final height is the same as the inial height)

Vercal
Acceleraon is equal to g.
Vercal velocity is zero at the maximum height.
Speed is the same at the same height (direcon is opposite).

Ex: Find the vertical and horizontal components of the following

launch vector: 2 m/s 15o above the horizontal.

1.5 - Projectile Motion

Example
A basketball is thrown off a cliff with an inial velocity of 2 m/s at an angle of
15˚ above the horizontal. Calculate:
a) It’s height a8er 1.5 s.
b) How far it has travelled horizontally in this me.
c) Its velocity at this me.

1.5 - Projectile Motion

Ex 3. A football is thrown at 10 m/s [30° above horizontal] and lands at the

same vercal level.
a) Find the me of flight

b) Find how far it travels (horizontal distance)

c) The maximum height

Ex 4. A golf ball , driven at an angle of 40˚ lands on an green that is 10 m

below the tee box that is 20 m away (horizontally). Find the me that the ball
is in the air.

1.5 - Projectile Motion

Ex 5. A golf ball , driven at an angle of 25˚ lands on an elevated green that is

5 m above the tee box. If the ball is in the air for 2.2 s, calculate:
a) The inial speed of the ball.

b) The horizontal distance that the ball travels.

c) The maximum height that the ball reaches.
