Let’s Explore and Discover

Notice the pictures below. What do you think are the things commonly depicted in
each of the picture?

As discussed in the previous learning activity sheet, you probably have the following
terms in mind.
Trajectory Motion in two dimensions Projectile Motion
To recall:
Trajectory is a curved path followed by a moving object as a result of force acting on the
object.
Motion in two dimensions- is a motion that describes an object that moves in both
horizontal and vertical dimensions.
Projectile Motion- when an object moves in two dimensions with gravity as the only force
acting as it continually moves after it reaches the maximum height.

2
If you have those words mentioned above in
mind, then you are right! Now let’s try to closely
examine each of the pictures to see what other
things we can commonly notice.
1. In picture 1, do you notice a certain angle
from the point the object is released? Do
you also notice it with the other pictures 2
and 3?

2. In picture 2, does the object reach a maximum height after a force was applied?
What about with the other pictures 1 and 3?
As the object goes up in air its vertical
velocity decreases this is due to the effect
of gravity. When the object reaches the
maximum height its vertical velocity
becomes zero. At this point the object will
move downward with icreasing velocity
and accelerates at constant value of -9.8
m/s2. We call it acceleration due to gravity,
g, The negative sign indicates that the
direction of the movement is on the
negative y or downward direction.
3. What about the horizontal displacement travelled by
the object during the entire duration of the flight in
picture 3? Do you also observe the same thing with
the other pictures 1 and 2? The horizontal
displacement travelled by the object from the time it
was launched into the air to the point it landed back
to the surface is called the range of the projectile.
The observations we had above are actually properties
of the projectile that we would like to focus on in this
learning activity sheet. Figure 1 on the left shows an activity
called Water Blobbing. This was taken at Pandan Island,
Honda Bay, Puerto
Photo by Jovani Bontogon Princesa, Palawan. By
the look of it, it seems
to be fun and exciting yet I think a “no-I-won’t-do-it-
again” experience. What do you think?
Now, let’s discuss the scientific factors that have
contributed to the excitement of this water sport.
The picture clearly shows a projectile motion. In
the previous topic, you learned about identifying the
components of a moving objects in horizontal and
vertical dimensions. Now to easily identify and
understand the components for motion involving both
dimensions we just have to simply split the two
dimensions into their individual components. Since
the motions are in a perpendicular axes (y-axis and x-
axis), we can actually analyse it separately. Talking
Figure 1: Water Blobbing, Pandan about motion, as discussed in your previous lessons in
Island, Honda Bay, Puerto Princesa grade 8, velocity (v), acceleration (a) and displacement
City
(d) are obviously involved.
3
Let us describe projectile motion using the scenario in Figure 1 in an order of using
the components step-by-step. You may glance at Figure 2 below from time to time as we go
through the description.
Let's start! A projectile motion is a type of motion that was initiated by a force (in A).
Obviously, the object/person where the force is applied to (B) will move to a certain direction
at a certain velocity (vi). The force causes an object to move in a parabolic (curved shape).
Why? As you can see, the very first position of the person ( in B), is not lying flat on the
inflatable water trampoline or blob. The edge is curved, tilting the person's initial position
at a certain angle (θ).

Now, let us describe first the movement with respect to the y-axis. Did the person
move in the y-dimension? Yes, he did. The initial force (in A), reaches a maximum height (C)
until all the initial force is consumed. What happens next? Did he continuously move? Yes,
he continously moved as gravity pulls the person towards the negative y direction
(downward) until it reaches the surface and stop moving (vf).
Let's describe the movement with respect to the x-axis this time. Did the person move
in the x dimension? Yes, he did! He covered a certain displacement (D) which was driven by
the initial force only. As we notice, from A, the force was applied along the y-axis, so we
should expect for the motion to take place along the y dimension. However, the slight slope
of angle, θ, allows the person to move in this dimension and covered point 1 to point 2 (D)
horizontally during the entire duration. While the velocity in the y dimension changes, in
the x direction there is no change in velocity so the person is not accelerating horizontally
but vertically.
Notice that the components were highlighted. That is for us to easily identify them
as we gather all the informations needed in solving projectile motion problems. The table
below summarizes all the components of projectile motion in two dimensions.

y-Dimension (Vertical x-Dimension (horizontal

Both Dimensions
dimension) dimension)

d = displacement
viy = Initial vertical velocity
v (vix =vfx ) = Uniform velocity,
h = height Angle θ
acceleration in the x dimension,
ag = acceleration due to gravity Time
therefore,
vfy = Final vertical velocity ag = 0

Now that we have understood the whole concept of projectile motion by identifying
the components involved in both dimensions, let’s do the same thing with another scenario
in the next activities in the succeeding pages.

4
Let’s Practice

Activity 1: The “Atsoy”!

Objective:
• Identify the projectile properties based on a given situation.

Scenario:
An “atsoy” landed at a teacher’s laptop on top of a table. The atsoy has been
launched at an estimated angle of 45º based on its trajectory which reached 7.66m high
according to the students who witnessed it. They said, the atsoy has been suspectedly
tossed with total hang time of 1.25 s with a velocity of 14.3 m/s to exactly hit the teacher’s
table which was 12.66 m away from the group of students just a minute before the recess
time. Currently, the group of students were on the guidance office being investigated for
breaking the teacher’s laptop with an “atsoy”. The figure below is the illustration of the
scenario.

who among the students really was the culprit.

Activity 2: The Angular Fountain
Objectives:
• Investigate the relationship between the angle of release, the maximum height and
the range of a projectile with initial force as the constant and the angle as the
variable.
Materials:
Faucet Hose Basin

Instructions:
1. Before turning on the faucet, make sure the hose is connected. If you don’t have hose
at home, you may want to try to ask your neighbour or a relative or a classmate to
try this activity in their house. This will not take much time anyway and we see to it
not to waste any water.
2. Remove the sprinkler if there’s any. Hold the other end of faucet in three different
angles doing the steps three times. First, is hold the end of the faucet in a 70° degree
angle just like in illustration A below.

3. Turn on the faucet. Cover 1/4 of the hose’s opening with your thumb, to increase
the pressure (force) thus increasing the liquid’s acceleration. Use the basin to catch
the water to make sure none is wasted. You may ask assistance from a family
member.
4. While doing the activity, consider the y-axis and the x-axis. Observe the height (y-
axis) and the displacement (x-axis) covered by the water’s trajectory. You may want
to use a stick or any long object to measure the approximate distance.
5. This time tilt the hose at 45° degrees angle (picture B above), observe the shape of
the fountain compared to the first angle of release.
6. Lastly, tilt the hose at 20° degrees angle (picture C), and then compare the shape of
the fountain with the last two angles.
7. Label the three fountains below by guessing the angle based on the shapes of the
trajectory formed (70°, 45°, 20° respectively).
8. Use your observation as you answer the guide questions that follow.
