1.

As intended by Arre in the video he said, “we see the structures of Manila all destroyed, however, the mountains
are still standing. It’s my way of saying that with all the corruption the country has deteriorated and because of
consumerism, we seem to have forgotten our hero, what they fought for”. Using the social constructivism theory of
representation theory, how do you personally interpret the message presented in the video?

I think the animation seen in the video represents the current situation of the Philippines, the ruined city of
Manila symbolizes how devastated and messed up our country is because of our own doings. We are not giving
justice to the sacrifices of those people who fought with their lives at stake just to give us the freedom from the grips
of the cruel invaders; instead we neglect their priceless efforts and keep on destroying our own country. But in the
video, as Rizal jumped across the broken bridge from the dark side towards the other bridge where there is light, it
made me realize that there’s still hope for us and for our country because we all have the capacity to change the
situation we are in, by starting a small act of change within ourselves.

2. Using the concept of Charles Sanders Pierce’s concept of semiotics, what does the peso in the opening scene
symbolize?

The one peso coin in the opening scene symbolizes two things, the face of Jose Rizal seen on the coin and
the number “1” and its value. Maybe there is an exposure of a one peso coin in the opening scene because it wishes
to help us recall and remember the bravery of our heroes represented by Rizal and that we should not forget their
heroism. The second symbolism is the number “1” in the coin which denotes Jose Rizal as our number 1 hero and it
also signifies the minimum value which is one peso that is accessible to every Filipino.

3. What is one dominant ideology that was represented in the video that shows the syntagmatic relationship between
Rizal as a national hero and the ‘doings’ of the Filipino?

In the video, it shows that Rizal as a national hero contradicts to the ‘doings’ of the Filipinos because as we
all know, Rizal was hailed as our national hero because of his remarkable acts that brought positive impact to the
Filipinos and to the country. Unlike the doings of the Filipinos, it is the total opposite of Rizal’s acts and
accomplishments for the outcome of our deeds usually lead to disorder and unbearable destruction. As Rizal
promotes peace and harmony among Filipinos, our own ‘doings’ exposed us to danger, conflict and rivalry with one
another which ends up to disunity.

4. What difference will it make if radio had been the choice of media used for such narrative and music?

If the medium used to deliver the message was radio, I think it is impossible to convey the whole idea or
context of the message to the audience since radio can only provide you with music, and “Kaninong Anino” needs to
have animations and graphics because it involves symbolisms that help the viewers to fully understand and
appreciate its meaning. In radio, you cannot display anything visual that’s why it is not the best avenue although it
could offer you good music, but you will only decode the message through the lyrics unlike in the music video, the
animations help you interpret the whole idea.

5. How did the producers represent the ordinary Filipino and the realities in the country through the animation’s
mise-en-scene?

I believe Jose Rizal plays the role of an ordinary Filipino witnessing the downfall of the mother land and it
is because her sons and daughters are all selfish and self-centered. As he walked and passed by the ruined city of
Manila, he saw the total destruction of buildings and structures that I guess signifies the corruption and wicked
deeds of Filipinos towards the country. It’s sad to think that we are the ones who caused these destructions; we
should be ashamed of ourselves because we brought nothing but annihilation to our dear country, in order to show
our love for the country, we have to take actions to help the Philippines rise up once more.

6. How is Rizal depicted or portrayed in the video based the oral and visual codes? Does this support or contradict
your notion of a national hero?

Based on the oral and visual codes present in the video, Rizal’s image was not depicted as the typical noble
hero rather he was portrayed as a normal Filipino citizen bearing witness to the destruction of the country. He’s a
person who still believes that despite of the turmoil the country’s facing, there is a chance for change and revival
because just like what the famous quote says, “No matter what you are going through, there is always a light at the
end of a tunnel”. I believe his role in the music video strongly supports my notion of what a national hero would
look like, a person who sees the struggles and find ways on how to lessen the burden of the country, who deeply
cares and show much affection to the country and its people and who always think of possible ways and means on
how to improve the status of his fellow countrymen.

7. How do you interpret the question posed in the video, “Ang kalaban lang ba natin ay anino? If you were to answer
the question, what would be your answer?

I think this question pertains to what kind of shadow we are trying to overcome and who is our true enemy.
In order to win a fight or a battle, one should know who his real opponent is and what should he do in order to defeat
it and in this case I suppose the shadow refers to all kinds of corruption, malicious acts of man, evil thoughts of man,
and other stuff that are considered unpleasant and terrible. My answer to the question “Ang kalaban lang ba natin ay
anino?” is yes let’s say the shadow represents our foes and shadows can only be seen if there is lack of light or no
light at all which is total darkness, if we are challenge by our enemies, in order to win the battle we should find the
light and move towards it because it will make the shadows flee, in this case we should be optimistic at all times and
always look on the brighter side.
