Comments:
NOV is releasing bulletin 1000012197-PIB Rev03 to inform about issues with the BX-5
and BX-7 hydraulic door latch cylinders. Certain hydraulic door latch cylinders are prone
to cracking at the weld between the cylinder barrel and mounting flange.
Although this is bulletin is revision 3, Transocean have not received this bulletin the
past.
NOV is advising that this issue only pertains to a series of hydraulic cylinders
manufactured by Parker, the affected cylinders will have a serial number starting with FZ.
If your hydraulic door latch cylinder is affected by this bulletin then NOV will replace the

Required Actions:
Inspect the conditions of the hydraulic door latch cylinder.
Locate the serial number of the hydraulic door latch cylinder, if the serial number begins
with “FZ” then contact NOV so they can send you a replacement cylinder free of charge.
Once the new cylinder arrives on the rig, replace the affected Parker cylinder with the
new cylinder.
Objective
To inform customers to inspect the condition of the hydraulic cylinders in the BX5 Elevator.
Issue
NOV was recently informed by customers having issues with the hydraulic door cylinder in the BX5. In
both cases the cylinder showed a crack at the weld connecting the flange and the barrel, causing
downtime. Investigation revealed that the failure occurred due to corrosion, vibrations and shock load
on the elevator, causing the cylinder to fail (see pictures below).
It was also discovered that this failure is isolated to door cylinders made by Parker, manufactured
between March 2009 and April 2015. These cylinders can be identified by part number 50000680-10
(10140485-001).
Solution
NOV recommends customers to inspect the conditions of the cylinders on a daily basis (when tool is in
use), according to CAT I and II (see BX users manual 11031198-MAN for more information) and pay
special attention to the weld. Door cylinders showing any signs of cracks, should be replaced
immediately. Part number 50000680-10 (10140485-001) had been made obsolete and is replaced by
part number 11408582-001
Economic Impact
Parker Latch cylinders with part number 50000680-10 (10140485-001), having serial numbers starting
with “FZ” installed in elevators shipped to customer in a period of reported failure date and 5 years back
will be replaced free of charge. Installation can be done by customer, as described in the users manual.
