The two videos “Gloria” have different approaches.

In both videos the patient, Gloria

had counselling sessions with two different therapists, Feritz Perls and Carl Rogers. These

therapists had different approaches. This essay will discuss the different aspects of

approaches found in the films.

In Gloria’s session with Feritz Perls, awareness, contact and dialogue are being

applied throughout the session. In the beginning of the film, Perls highlights the principles

which he applies in his counselling session. He mentions that his approach disregards the

content of what the patients says but focuses on the non-verbal level. For instance, when

Gloria tells him that she is nervous, he immediately responses “But you are smiling, I don’t

understand how a person can be scared and smile at the same time”. Throughout the session,

Perls continues to confront the patient with questions which leads her to realise she is no

longer a little who has to sit at the corner every time she is afraid. Perls manipulates and

frustrates Gloria by not giving her the support and protection she wants him to. In fact, she

has to fend for herself and in many instances, she gets angry with Perls. For instance, she is

furious that when Perls says he does not respect the phony side of her. The session ends when

Gloria being aware of her needs to be respected and not to be criticized harshly.

On the other hand, Gloria reacts differently in her session with Carl Rogers. At the

beginning of the session, she tells Rogers that she feels calmer with his low and soothing

voice. Initially, Rogers tries to create a proper climate with Gloria by trying establish a

rapport with her. And, throughout the session he tries to see things from the patient’s point of

view and not his own. I believe he is trying to be sensitive to her feelings without imposing

on his own opinion about them. As the relationship is established while the therapy is being

conducted, Gloria becomes more relaxed and open up more readily about her feelings and

dilemma she is experiencing. And, towards the end of the session, she realises she has to find

out the solutions to address these issues on her own and not depend on the therapist to them

to her. Additionally, she is also aware that she is trying to be a good mother while involving

in some immoral actions. The facts that she is able to evaluate herself and make judgement

about herself reflect the therapy has succeeded in moving her self-evaluation from external to

internal. In other words, Gloria is able to recognise her own ability in judgement making and

drawing conclusion.

In conclusion, there is no doubts that both approaches have different techniques in

helping the client to resolve her problems. In both therapies, Gloria has become more aware

of herself and independent enough to make her own decisions in life. Even though Perls’s

approach seems to be demeaning and putting down the client, he able to make her identifies

her own values. On the other hand, Roger’s approach emphasizes on positive relationship

with the client by being transparent and genuine in it. Gloria discovers her self-values and she

is able to take control of her own life.
