a) understand and define moment, and,
b) determine moments of a force in 2-D and 3-D cases.

MOMENT IN 2-D
Mo = d x F
As shown, d is the perpendicular
distance from point O to the line
of action of the force.
Mo = d x F
O
Mo = (2 m) x (100 N) = 200 Nm
2m
Mo = d x F
Mo = (0.75 m) x (50 N)
= 37.5 Nm
7
EXAMPLE
Mo = d x F
Mo = (4 + 2cos30o) x (40)
= 229 Nm
Mo = d x F
Mo = (1sin45o) x (60 N)
= 42.4 Nm
8
EXAMPLE
Mo = d x F
Mo = (4 – 1 m) x (7 kN)
= 21.0 kNm
9
EXAMPLE
-334 Nm

CROSS PRODUCT (continued)
Of even more utility, the cross product can be written as
15
MOMENT IN 3-D (continued)
So, using the cross product, a moment can be expressed as
MO = (r y FZ - rZ Fy) i - (r x Fz - rz Fx ) j
+ (rx Fy - ry Fx ) k
16
EXAMPLE
Plan:
Solution
+ Fy = -400 cos 20° N
+ Fx = -400 sin 20° N
+ MA = {2 x 400 cos 20° +
3 x (400 sin 20°)} N·m
= 1160 N·m
18
EXAMPLE
Given: A 40 N force is
applied to the wrench.
Find: The moment of the
force at O.
Plan: 1) Resolve the force
along x and y axes.
2) Determine MO using
scalar analysis.
Solution: + Fy = - 40 cos 20° N
+ Fx = - 40 sin 20° N
+ MO = {-(40 cos 20°)(200) + (40 sin 20°)(30)}N·mm
= -7107 N·mm = - 7.11 N·m

MOMENT OF A COUPLE
Objectives: The crossbar lug wrench is
Students will be able to being used to loosen a lug
net. What is the effect of
a) define a couple, and, changing dimensions a, b,
b) determine the moment of a couple. or c on the force that must
be applied?
23
APPLICATIONS
24
MOMENT OF A COUPLE
A couple is defined as
two parallel forces with
the same magnitude but
opposite in direction
separated by a perpendi-
cular distance “d”.
